Charles Melton and Co-Stars Ink Matching Tattoos During Intense ‘Warfare’ Filming!

Charles Melton and his co-stars from the “Warfare” production devised unique methods to forge bonds during the filming of the A24 movie, which recounts a genuine Navy SEALs operation that took place during the Iraq War.

The premiere of the film occurred on Wednesday at the Hollywood Legion Theater in Los Angeles, offering military veterans a unique opportunity to view it before its nationwide release on April 11. Following the screening, directors Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland were joined on stage by Melton, co-star D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, and several veterans who had been involved in the real events that transpired in 2006.

Melton shared that the cast underwent an intense three-month training program, which he referred to as an “immersive boot camp”. The aim was to familiarize themselves with the mindset of a Navy SEAL. This involved learning their unique ways of moving, terminology, military strategies, and communication techniques – from 6 am until 6 pm each day. Moreover, Melton mentioned that all the stars got their hair buzzed off together as part of this experience. He also revealed that they formed strong bonds with one another and even got matching tattoos.

Woon-A-Tai admitted he received a tattoo with the phrase “Call on Me.” The former star of Reservation Dogs joked about its placement, saying, “I had it done below my underwear since I don’t anticipate any sex scenes in future roles. It’s easy to conceal there.” Woon-A-Tai added, “On occasion, I wake up naked and catch a glimpse of it. I think, ‘I miss those days.’

To put it another way, Woon-A-Tai expressed, “In just a short period of a few months, I truly formed a bond with these individuals that feels like brotherhood.” Joining the cast in this film are Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Michael Gandolfini, Noah Centineo, and Joseph Quinn.

Mendoza and Garland collaborated on the screenplay for “Warfare,” drawing from Mendoza’s experiences during the Iraq War. They gathered insights from interviews with actual members of Mendoza’s platoon. After working together on Garland’s latest film, “Civil War,” where Mendoza served as a military consultant, they teamed up to direct the movie.

Garland stated that above all, the movie ‘Warfare’ is a manifestation of sincerity. This is why it portrays its subject matter in a unique way – because it’s raw, candid, and utterly authentic.

Mendoza shared that as a filmmaker, his ambition was to eventually create a film that could articulate this particular story, considering the difficulties veterans often face in explaining their war experiences to non-combatants: “At some point, I wanted to produce my own movie and effectively represent the intricate aspects of such stories, so that it might serve as a voice for someone struggling to express something.
