Charlie Cox Reveals Spider-Man: No Way Home's Scrapped Joke About Ben Affleck's Daredevil, And I'm Honestly Surprised Deadpool And Wolverine Didn't Use It

As a seasoned gamer with a heart for comic book lore, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia and disappointment when I hear about these missed opportunities. The idea of an intricate web of references and easter eggs that connects the different Marvel universes is as appealing to me as a level-up in my favorite RPG.

In the sequence of Marvel movies, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was the pioneer in assembling characters from various cinematic universes within the Marvel Cinematic Universe itself. This movie gathered three distinct on-screen versions of Spider-Man, and it almost incorporated a nod to another Marvel film that would have fit well if it had originated from Deadpool.

The movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home” brought back Charlie Cox for a short while as Matt Murdoch, signifying that he would indeed resume his character as Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At Tampa Bay Comic Con (through Popverse), Cox mentioned that there was a scene filmed, but not included in the final cut, which featured Jon Favreau, who played Foggy Nelson in Ben Affleck’s “Daredevil,” acknowledging his previous role. Cox elaborated on…

In Spider-Man, I had the chance to act alongside Jon Favreau, whom I admire. Interestingly enough, he portrayed Foggy in that particular film, Daredevil from 2003. While I’m not certain if it ultimately made it into the final cut of the movie, we attempted to insert a clever joke or nod, similar to an Easter egg. The idea was for me to ask a question, and Jon’s character Happy would respond with ‘Yeah, I’m a bit hazy about that right now.’ I can’t recall if it ended up in the film, but on set we had fun trying to come up with something, hoping viewers might catch the subtle reference.

Sadly, the scene featuring Cox and Favreau’s characters discussing potential legal troubles for Happy Hogan didn’t make the cut in the final movie. It would have been interesting to see an alternate take where Hogan claimed he was unsure about the subject matter, which I think could have added depth to the storyline. I wish it had been included instead.

It seems I had almost overlooked the fact that Jon Favreau was part of the cast in Daredevil, and it’s been quite a while since I last watched Affleck’s portrayal. Given how many people might have missed the humor, perhaps the scene wasn’t included. However, such a joke fits perfectly with the unconventional storyline of Daredevil and its connection to Happy, making it a possible fit for a scene involving Wolverine too.

Indeed, Jon Favreau makes a brief appearance in the film titled “Deadpool & Wolverine” as Happy Hogan, similar to his role in “No Way Home“. Although a “Foggy” joke might not have made sense at that particular moment, later on in the movie Deadpool encounters Jennifer Garner’s Electra and they take jabs at the “Daredevil” film and its unsuccessful sequel. Given that Favreau had already been seen in the movie earlier, a nod to this fact would not have seemed unusual or out of place.

In the hypothetical scenario where Channing Tatum played Gambit alongside Deadpool and Wolverine (a fictional movie), a wink-wink joke involving Favreau as Foggy Nelson wouldn’t have been out of place in the latest Marvel production. With the increasing role of Charlie Cox’s character in the MCU, set to expand further with “Daredevil: Born Again” premiering next year, it’s possible that the new and old versions of Foggy Nelson could cross paths in some future project. Undeniably, such a meeting wouldn’t pass without a nod to their shared history.
