Chicago Fire May Have Cut Somebody From One Chicago’s Crossover, But One Star Has A Hilarious Take On The Event: ‘Hopefully We Don’t Tear Down Med’s Set’

Spoilers ahead for Episode 10 of Chicago Fire Season 13, called “Chaos Theory.”

In the latest episode of “Chicago Fire” entitled “Chaos Theory,” the team didn’t pull any punches as one character experienced a rollercoaster of emotions before making a decision that could potentially exclude him from the upcoming One Chicago crossover event. The character, Joe Cruz, confessed to his past involvement in the Flaco situation where he left a gang member to burn in a fire over a decade ago, and it might take a few weeks for viewers to see Joe Minoso again on the show. However, when speaking with TopMob, the actor shared some amusing thoughts about crossovers!

Has Cruz Been Cut From The Crossover?

In “Chaos Theory,” it turned out that Cruz’s guilt eventually overpowered him. This timing was fortunate since the truth likely would have been revealed eventually – especially after he sustained an arm wound and Severide began probing further with Chief Pascal’s encouragement. Overhearing Javi brag about having a brave firefighter father, Cruz confessed his actions to Severide and decided to surrender himself to CPD.

Luckily, Severide could rely on scientific facts: the temperature in that house was dangerously high all those years ago, and Flaco would have perished regardless of whether Cruz had closed the door or not. Nonetheless, Cruz confessed his actions to Chicago P.D.’s Atwater, prepared to face the consequences… until the district attorney informed him, Severide, and Pascal that they lacked sufficient evidence to bring charges against him.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I must share an intriguing twist in this narrative: The story didn’t conclude there, for Pascal suspected Cruz of frequent dishonesty. Consequently, he imposed a two-week unpaid suspension on the Squad firefighter, effective immediately, deeming his actions as “unbecoming.” Unapologetic, Cruz acknowledged his wrongdoings – lying and withholding information – confessing to Chloe the same regret. He expressed his shame over his actions.

By the finale, it appeared Pascal didn’t hold Cruz in lower regard, as Cruz admitted he was honest even after discovering from Severide that his secret could have remained hidden if he kept quiet. “I want to be the man my son believes me to be,” Cruz stated, seeming to bring the story to a close.

Pascal concluded the encounter by mentioning they’d meet again in about two weeks, and the One Chicago crossover is set to air next week on January 29. Given NBC has postponed new episodes of One Chicago on Wednesdays, this could imply that Cruz might not be involved in the crossover event. However, if there’s a suspension for Cruz, it may be that he won’t be present when things go awry across all three series during those two weeks.

Essentially, it remains unclear whether Cruz will be absent from Chicago Med and Chicago P.D. next week due to his suspension, but there’s definitely cause for speculation. Regardless, I’m really intrigued by Joe Minoso’s thoughts on the One Chicago crossover events.

Joe Mińoso’s Take On One Chicago’s Event

During an early January chat with Joe Minoso for NBC’s One Chicago winter premiere event, we discussed how Chicago Fire paid tribute to its first season in an over-the-top manner and what continues to haunt Cruz even now. Given his long-standing involvement with the franchise, I asked him if he had any suggestions for the fresh faces joining the cast who haven’t experienced a three-show crossover yet. He initially quipped that other One Chicago actors should aim for the smallest storylines possible because it translates to more days off, then added:

Just be authentic and enjoy yourself! It’s like going to your cousin’s house to play with their toys – everyone has their unique traits. And just like cousins, we all bring our individual idiosyncrasies. Fire is no exception, let’s hope we don’t disrupt Med’s setup. Steven Weber seems to be thriving there. Everything over there is tidy and warm most of the time. They even wear comfortable scrubs. I don’t feel the need to guide them. They are living the high life up there. On Fire, we call it Club Med – they can handle things just fine without me.

Chicago Med, often enough, finds its cast working within indoor settings and donning casual attire! Interestingly, S. Epatha Merkerson pointed out that the doctors and nurses at Med essentially work in “pajamas and slippers,” contrasting her role as administrator Sharon Goodwin who was required to wear “suits and high heels.” Compared to the other two shows, Fire, tends to cause more chaos, which can lead to set complications when a significant portion of the crossover takes place on the Med set.

Interestingly enough, Joe Minoso shouted out Steven Weber during a shared appearance at the One Chicago winter premiere event. This was because Weber was there representing Chicago Med, and coincidentally, Minoso from Chicago Fire was also present. In fact, I had spoken to Weber only a few minutes before interviewing Minoso, where I asked for his thoughts on Weber’s comment that the upcoming event was “the One Chicago equivalent of Avengers: Endgame.” Minoso playfully retorted:

It’s amusing how he uses that remark, as it reminds me of our early days on the show when we embarked on our first crossover event. Back then, I couldn’t help but note the similarities to the Avengers. I remember thinking, “Wow, this is just like the Avengers!” However, at that time, I was referring to the first Avengers film. I jokingly pointed out that we were TV’s version of the Avengers, given our penchant for these elaborate crossover events. Naturally, it seems typical of Steven Weber to borrow my line. It indeed has his signature style.

Looking beyond the humor, it seems we’re in store for a thrilling prime-time event with this crossover, marking the first three-part series since the “Infection” event back in 2019. If you’re curious about watching that earlier event, it’s available with a Peacock subscription now. As for whether or not Cruz will be involved, we’ll have to tune in on Wednesday, January 29 to find out!
