As a dedicated fan who’s been following the One Chicago Franchise for years, I must say that this latest episode was a breath of fresh air! The crossover between the shows has been rare these days, much like a unicorn sighting at O’Hare Airport. But when it does happen, it’s as magical as a Chicago skyline at sunset.

When Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith) makes a bold move by performing a risky cesarean section on a deceased mother, her career is at stake as her medical license gets suspended. She appeals to Chicago Med veteran Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) for support during her hearing at Engine 51. However, Sharon advises Violet that the panel she’ll be facing consists of doctors, and instead, she should find someone with more influence to back her up.
To everyone’s astonishment, it isn’t Sharon but Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney), who hasn’t quite won over the crew yet, who steps in to help Violet at the panel. Despite his past disagreements with Lieutenant Stephen Vale (Phil Donlon) due to his wife, Pascal chooses to set aside their differences for Violet’s sake, as she genuinely strives to do her best. Not only does Vale speak highly of Violet, he also brings an alderman along. In the end, Paramedic Field Chief Robinson (Laura Allen) commends Violet for her actions, and even the baby’s aunt praises her, leading to Violet being reinstated on the team.
For several seasons now, the One Chicago series has only occasionally featured characters crossing over. However, this recent turn of events represents one of the rare instances where an external character has significantly impacted the plot. Here’s why it’s significant.
One Chicago crossovers have been rare these days
The appearances of characters from the One Chicago series in each other’s shows have become increasingly rare. Most notably, Detective Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) from Chicago P.D. has been visiting her husband Randy “Mouch” McHolland (Christian Stolte) more frequently. This trend is partly due to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which made it harder than normal to bring together all the different cast members for filming.
Previously serving as executive producers on Chicago Med, Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider shared with TVInsider their approach to weaving together diverse storylines. They pointed out that a major crossover event is under discussion, but it’s challenging because each show features characters immersed in unique story arcs at different dramatic points. Therefore, they must decide when it’s suitable for one character to appear on another series. Frolov also mentioned that the compressed production schedule of the previous season impacted the frequency of crossovers. Time will reveal if this situation evolves.
