Chicago Fire Vet Annie Ilonzeh Reveals 'Surprising' Details About Her New S.W.A.T. Character And Why Shemar Moore's Hondo Recruited Her

As a long-time fan of the gritty and gripping world of S.W.A.T., I find myself eagerly anticipating the arrival of Season 8, with its new addition, Devin Gamble, played by the talented Annie Ilonzeh. With her background in Chicago Fire and Arrow, she brings a rich depth to her character that promises to enrich the already dynamic cast.

The eighth season of the TV show S.W.A.T. commenced in July, and when it returns in October, you might notice some changes within the 20 Squad. Last season, the CBS series bid farewell to not one but two principal characters, leading many to believe that was the end for the show. However, with Street and Luca no longer on board, the team found it challenging to find suitable replacements for their family. It has been revealed that one of those new additions is actress Annie Ilonzeh, who is known for her role in Chicago Fire. She recently shared insights about her character and why Shemar Moore’s Hondo recruited her for the team.

Previously, it was made known that Annie Ilonzeh would reappear as Devin Gamble, an exceptional LAPD rookie who moved to Oakland because of a crime her father committed. Now that there are vacancies in the 20-Squad, Hondo is bringing Gamble onto the team. According to TV Insider, Ilonzeh discusses the history between these characters and it seems that this recruitment has been eagerly anticipated by Shemar Moore’s character for quite some time.

10 years ago, when Hondo first saw the special talent or ‘it’ factor in rookie officer Gamble at the LAPD, he declared, “I want her assigned to squad 20.” Since then, he had been mentoring Gamble. When her father’s questionable past caused trouble, Hondo felt compelled to help and arranged for Gamble to be transferred to Oakland, shielding her from any potential fallout.

In the finale of S.W.A.T.‘s seventh season (that wasn’t altered because of the announced cancellation), Hondo spoke with Commander Hicks about his desire for more than just filling his team. Instead, he emphasized that he wants to choose individuals who truly belong on the team, as he strives to create a family-like dynamic within 20-Squad, both on and off the battlefield.

From the get-go, Hondo recognized that Gamble would be an invaluable addition to his team, underscoring her unique talent. Furthermore, Devin is described as tough yet dedicated, with exceptional shooting skills and a cool demeanor. As Annie Ilonzeh puts it, she exudes both femininity and masculinity, suggesting that she could significantly contribute to the team.

As viewers tune in to each episode, they’ll gain insights into Gable’s past and witness how she fits within the team. The actress from ‘Arrow’, furthermore, has hinted that her character in ‘S.W.A.T.’ will share a unique relationship with a specific character on the established series.

Later in the storyline, it’s expected that Gamble’s family will make an appearance. The viewers will witness intense moments as they come to understand why Gamble is so self-critical yet driven to excel within SWAT’s 20 squad. Much of this stems from her relationship with her father and the impact he has had on her life, serving as a catalyst for redemption.

It’s fascinating to learn that in the upcoming season, Deacon might form a unique connection with Gamble, considering his initial plans for retirement at the end of Season 7. As a viewer, I can’t wait to witness their bonding moments, particularly since we don’t know much about Deacon’s family background. While it’s uncertain if Deacon’s father was a notorious criminal, there seem to be some shared traits and perhaps unhealed wounds from Deacon’s past that might resurface.

The S.W.A.T. team has stepped into a fresh phase, and I’m excited to find out if Hondo’s choice to incorporate Devin is a smart one. Fans will learn more about this character when Season 8 debuts on Friday, October 18 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS as part of the 2024 TV lineup. Until then, you can get up to speed by watching previous episodes with a Paramount+ membership.
