Following the disclosure that Hannah Asher is expecting in the final episode of Chicago Med‘s tenth season, showrunner Allen MacDonald hints that viewers might want to consider who the baby’s father could be.
According to an interview with TVLine, McDonald hints at the possibility of Hannah being in a secret romance with her confidante. However, he adds that Hannah’s complex relationship with Ripley might be the reason for her pregnancy. Here’s the rephrased quote for clarity: In his chat with TVLine, McDonald suggests that there could be a hidden romantic connection between Hannah and her good friend. Yet, he also notes that Hannah’s tumultuous bond with Ripley could account for her being pregnant.
It seems reasonable for the audience to wonder about the paternity. Since they’re not privy to what transpired off-screen, when they notice inconsistencies between Ripley and Archer’s timelines, they miss out on understanding Hannah’s actions.
She needs to inform a couple of individuals before moving on. Specifically, she must update her sister, and also disclose the situation to the child’s father. These matters seem to be weighing heavily on her mind as she prepares for the season finale.
MacDonald further explained that, no matter who the father was, he wouldn’t label Asher as being either “joyful” or “unhappy” about her current pregnancy. The showrunner added:
It appears she’s both astonished and taken aback by this outcome, as she didn’t anticipate it. In season 10, episode 20, Maggie mentions that Hannah is unwell at home too, implying it’s not just the nurses who are affected. This has been gradually hinted at in the storyline. However, despite being an OB-GYN, I believe she never thought this was what it would turn out to be.
