Chicago P.D. Stars Are Hyping Torres And Cook’s Bond In Season 12, But I’m Not Sure It’ll Last Beyond The Next Episode

As a long-time fan of Chicago P.D., I’ve seen my fair share of shake-ups within the Intelligence Unit. However, the arrival of Officer Kiana Cook has been a breath of fresh air, especially her partnership with Torres that seems to be blossoming. Having watched every season since its inception, I’ve come to appreciate the camaraderie and bonds formed amidst the chaos of One Chicago.

In the 12th season of Chicago P.D., there have been some alterations within the Intelligence Unit, most notably Upton’s departure and the introduction of a questionable new deputy chief. Kiana Cook, who previously worked with Voight in a rain-soaked episode, has officially joined the team as per the fall 2024 TV schedule. The dynamic between Cook and Torres is being explored, with actors Benjamin Levy Aguilar and Toya Turner discussing their characters’ relationship in an interview with TopMob. However, it seems that this partnership may not endure beyond the events depicted in this week’s episode.

The upcoming episode slated for November 13 is titled “Contrition.” In this installment, Torres grapples with the intricacies of his relationship with Gloria, while Cook embarks on her inaugural undercover mission with the Intelligence Unit. During a chat with Toya Turner about her character following Marina Squerciati’s significant Burgess episode, I inquired about who Cook feels most connected to at present, and she promptly shared her thoughts on the matter without hesitation.

Cook is closest to Torres. It would have to be Torres and then Ruzek.

Reflecting on my personal experience, having assisted Ruzek in the intense investigation into Detective Martel’s murder, which ultimately led him to the Intelligence Unit, I found myself following in the footsteps of the New Amsterdam alum who placed him second only to Torres. Regarding Torres, during my subsequent conversation with Benjamin Levy Aguilar, he echoed Turner’s sentiments about their strong bond and offered his own insights as well.

In Episode 5, the connection between Kiana and Torres was extraordinary, marked by his ability to trust his intuition when she spoke truthfully and their shared effort in solving the case, which brought them even closer together.

It’s tough to envision Intelligence Unit being as appealing to Cook if not for her past collaboration with Torres in Episode 5. That short-lived alliance might be the key factor behind Intelligence having five officers again, under Voight. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can catch up by streaming Episode 5 with a Peacock subscription. However, any case involving Gloria is particularly sensitive for Torres, and judging from the promo, “Contrition” won’t be an exception. As Aguilar added, this isn’t going to be a simple case for Torres.

It appears that the topics of the upcoming episode revolve around events from his past and relationships he finds hard to trust. This could lead to some tense interactions, as he may not fully disclose everything. However, despite his efforts to shield himself, there is still a strong connection, making any pain or conflict potentially more profound for him.

The two latest additions to the Intelligence Unit share a strong connection, yet it’s evident that Torres excels at covert operations, whereas Cook is about to embark on his initial foray into undercover work. Aguilar commented on their disparities, expressing:

It’s thrilling to see her embark on her first undercover assignment. I look forward to assisting her with similar tasks in the future. Torres is truly versatile and adept at such work, but given the unique circumstances of this episode, he regrets not being able to provide better guidance if it were in a different situation.

Indeed, it’s clear that Cook possesses ample experience and ability as a CPD officer, although she may not be quite as adaptable or versatile as Torres or her other new colleagues. I inquired from Toya Turner about the readiness of her character to dive into Intelligence operations, and she chuckled and responded:

She’s not! She’s not at all. Coming from tactical and patrol, there’s not a lot of undercover activities going on. I guess she’s as prepared and as eager and willing to jump into it head first. She has no experience. I feel like pretty much the audience is watching Kiana grow too, because she’s never interrogated anybody, like she did in Episode 5. She’s normally [tactical], with the guns, the weapons, going in. Everything is very close and personal for her while she’s working with the unit. She’s just a fish out of water.

As a devoted fan, I can attest that navigating the world of One Chicago feels like being a fish out of water, and without a doubt, “P.D.” stands out as the most intense among NBC’s trio of Wednesday night dramas. When I expressed my apprehension about diving into the Intelligence Unit led by Voight, Toya Turner aptly compared it to plunging headfirst into deep waters.

Absolutely! [laughs] Absolutely, indeed. This equipment always brings surprises, something new each day. It keeps things interesting for me, and I believe it does for Kiana as well. A touch of unpredictability can be thrilling, if I may say so myself.

It seems likely that Torres’ increased pressure due to Gloria’s return and Cook’s lack of expertise in undercover work could potentially strain their relationship. The key factor will be how well Cook adapts to this kind of work, and it remains intriguing as to why she was selected for this mission given her limited experience. With Gloria involved, things are rarely simple!

Although it’s premature to predict a strain in their relationship between these two officers, the upcoming “Contrition” episode seems to hint at a potential rift. Admittedly, I could be overthinking it, but the trailer for what appears to be an emotionally charged TV hour for Torres certainly raises some questions about their future camaraderie.

Listen to NBC on Wednesday, November 13th at 10:00 PM Eastern Time for the upcoming episode of “Chicago P.D.” starring Benjamin Levy Aguilar and Toya Turner. This will follow “Chicago Fire” featuring Severide’s latest adversary at 9:00 PM ET, and “Chicago Med” where Archer and Lenox are at odds at 8:00 PM ET. Don’t forget to catch up on previous seasons of all three shows, now available for streaming on Peacock.
