Summary
- On June 17, Japanese label Children of the Discordance made a loud return to the Pitti Uomo stage for the fair’s 108th edition, showcasing an expressive collection of rough-edged reworked garments and clashing details inspired by urban subculture.
Earlier mentioned, the fashion label Children of the Discordance made a comeback at Florence’s Pitti Uomo for its 108th installment today, sharing the spotlight with Asian brands Post Archive Faction (PAF) and Homme Plisse Issey Miyake as esteemed guests. Designer Hideaki Shikama unleashed an array of bold, reworked garments, showcasing an expressive mix of cut-up pieces that mirror the rebellious spirit and urban chaos of youth cultures in defiance.
In a formal announcement, Shikama drew a comparison between his early fashion and DJing – a fitting analogy for the collection, characterized by reworked, remixed styles. As he put it, “Just like DJs don’t play the same tracks twice, we too strive to choose unique clothing items. This ethos is deeply ingrained in everything I create.
Shikama sought the help of a skilled pattern maker friend who was trained in London to infuse tailoring finesse into their structured clothing items such as skirts, jackets, pants, and shorts. Yet, the brand retains its unique, edgy flair through additional techniques like aged dyeing, dismantled shapes, and unbalanced designs. Patchwork suits are created by blending different shades of solid black, navy, khaki, and gray materials in diverse patterns, while elsewhere, fabric remnants are sewn together to form a horizontal striped material used for coats, trousers, and jackets.
The idea of “discordance” is represented by a fusion of garments that have been sewn together down the middle. This includes a Japanese souvenir jacket featuring animal designs, vibrantly over-dyed sweatpants, a graphic football jersey, and a coordinating tracksuit. These items contrast and blend with one another, while other prominent patterns, accents, and details include paisley designs, graffiti artwork, faded emblems, multicolored gemstone embellishments, and plenty of distressing effects.
In conclusion, the performance by Children of the Discordance ended with an atypical wedding dance using wrinkled white and black shirts, culminating in a sparkling cross decorating a combination of hood and veil.
