Chiwetel Ejiofor Explains Difference Between Doctor Strange's Karl Mordo and Venom: The Last Dance Character

As a seasoned movie-goer with a penchant for both the fantastical and the heartwarmingly human, I find myself eagerly anticipating Chiwetel Ejiofor’s latest ventures on the silver screen. His role as General Rex Strickland in Venom: The Last Dance promises to be an intriguing departure from his Marvel character, Karl Mordo.

Actors such as Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor effortlessly transition between characters and make their performances appear effortless on the big screen. However, Ejiofor acknowledges that there’s a significant distinction between his character in Venom: The Last Dance, General Rex Strickland, and his renowned Marvel character, Karl Mordo, from the movie Doctor Strange. During an interview with ComicBook.com, Ejiofor explained this difference further by stating:

The primary distinction lies in his character, General Strickland. His meticulous nature and sense of duty, along with a grounded, practical approach, are striking. The entire setup is rooted in authenticity, with significant consequences for him. It’s as if he’s trying to maintain order over a highly classified military base that operates within the real-world context.

In Marvel comics, Strickland is known as Tyrannosaurus, but details about his connection with the symbiotes from “The Last Dance” are kept under wraps to avoid spoilers. Yet, it can be inferred that Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character will face considerable challenges in the concluding part of Sony’s symbiote trilogy. The actor further hinted:

In his storyline, filled with intricacies due to the scientific division of the facility led by Doctor Payne (Juno Temple). This leads to a clash of opinions regarding the ideal approach towards these extraterrestrial beings. The entire scenario, including these tensions, was fascinating to portray and enjoyable to work with Juno on, which is what truly made it unique.

Tom Hardy hints at more Venom appearances down the line, but won’t be playing the character himself. Contrastingly, Chiwetel Ejiofor keeps quiet about potentially reprising his role as Baron Mordo in the MCU. Nevertheless, Ejiofor expresses great enthusiasm for both “Venom: The Last Dance” and starring in the romantic comedy genre with Renee Zellweger in “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” which is set to release next year. In a conversation with Variety, Ejiofor shared his excitement about these projects.

I’m absolutely thrilled about ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ and the opportunity to work with Kelly Marcel and Tom Hardy. The entire Venom universe is incredibly captivating, and it’s a real treat to dive into it alongside such talented actors. I also can’t wait for ‘Bridget Jones’, as Renée does an outstanding job in her role. It’s quite a change of pace for me, and that’s something I find very intriguing.

When questioned about joining Jones’ charming and emotional universe, a realm renowned for being a product of Working Title Films, the actor simply replied with “Marvelous.” It’s worth noting that he was also part of another cherished romantic comedy produced by the same studio, entitled “Love Actually,” which hit theaters in 2003. The actor went on to say…

These movies radiate a special warmth. They are humorous, captivating, skillfully acted, and meticulously crafted… They possess both the human warmth of their characters and an insightful commentary on contemporary politics. Yet, they always deliver messages about our world with optimism, hopefulness, and even a glimpse of the best we can be. And I find that truly endearing.

Don’t miss Chiwetel Ejiofor in “Venom: The Last Dance” when it hits theaters on October 25, and keep an eye out for “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” on Valentine’s Day 2025. But for those eagerly anticipating Eddie Brock (Hardy) and his wise-cracking symbiote, you can catch a sneak peek of Venom in a humorous Hot Ones promo right now.
