If someone had told me at the start of this week that I’d be spending a significant portion of Wednesday watching a livestream revealing actor names on chairs for over 5.5 hours, I wouldn’t have taken it seriously. However, that’s exactly how Marvel Studios chose to announce the cast for Avengers: Doomsday, with Robert Downey Jr. hinting that there are still more names to be disclosed. Meanwhile, speculation is growing about the upcoming Marvel film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Contrary to rumors suggesting Downey will appear as Doctor Doom in this movie before Doomsday, that’s not what I’m referring to.
According to reports from MyTimeToShineHello (via ComicBookMovie), the upcoming film “First Steps” may include a surprise appearance by Chris Evans, who was previously known for playing both Human Torch and Captain America. The specifics regarding how Evans might be involved in the Fantastic Four’s latest movie have yet to be disclosed, with no information available on whether it will only be a brief cameo or a more substantial role. For now, it is best to approach this claim cautiously, but let’s assume for the purposes of this article that the information provided is accurate.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, if we’re discussing “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” I can confidently say that Chris Evans is not needed for a reprise of his role as Johnny Storm from the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four films. Last year, he revisited this character in Deadpool & Wolverine, but sadly, Johnny didn’t survive Cassandra Nova’s wrath due to Wade Wilson’s reckless actions. While some might suggest Evans could play a different interpretation of Johnny, given that Joseph Quinn is making his debut as the same character, I believe it’s unlikely the filmmakers would want to overshadow him with another Human Torch in this fresh start.
Instead, I’m betting that he will portray a different character rather than Steve Rogers, whom we last saw as an old man in Avengers: Endgame. It seems to me that this could be a version of Steve from another part of the Marvel multiverse, and one who may not be heroic. Following reports in December that Evans will appear in Avengers: Day of Judgment (he wasn’t listed in the cast announcement), there have been whispers that he might take on multiple roles within the film.

Visit Disney+’s streaming platform to rewatch Chris Evans’ time as Captain America, catch his earlier appearances as Human Torch, and see him again in Deadpool and Wolverine. The new plan featuring ads begins at just $9.99 per month. For an ad-free experience, pay $15.99 a month or save 16% by pre-paying $159.99 for a year. Take advantage of this offer now!
It’s yet undecided whether Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will be the original Victor von Doom or a version similar to Tony Stark. However, there have been suggestions that Chris Evans could portray an evil character in “Doomsday,” perhaps the Captain HYDRA version of Steve Rogers. Given the rumors that Downey’s character might appear in the end-credits scene of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” it’s possible that this evil Steve could be seen alongside Doctor Doom in that scene, potentially paving the way for “Doomsday.
We’ll discover if Chris Evans is truly part of “First Steps” once it premieres on July 25. Following that, “Avengers: Doomsday” will mark the start of the conclusion for The Multiverse Saga, set to begin on May 1, 2026.
