As a long-time Marvel fan and someone who grew up watching Chris Evans bring Johnny Storm to life in the early 2000s “Fantastic Four” films, I was absolutely thrilled to see him reprise the role in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The idea of seeing Evans back in the iconic blue suit again was a nostalgic dream come true.
Major spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine lie ahead, so read on at your own risk.
Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” has been highly anticipated as one of the major movies to come out in 2024, and since its premiere last week, it has created quite a stir. The film delivers an abundance of action, gore, humor, and emotion, along with some unexpected appearances by cameos and supporting characters. Among these surprise guests is Chris Evans, who fans might not have anticipated seeing in the movie. However, unlike his iconic role as Captain America, in this production Evans plays a different part. Recently, Evans has shared insights about his experience donning that particular costume once again.
As a dedicated gamer and avid Marvel Cinematic Universe fan, I was blown away by the latest film where Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson met Hugh Jackman’s Logan in the Void. At first, I thought Chris Evans’ character was the iconic Steve Rogers aka Captain America. But boy, was I wrong! It turned out to be Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch, which took me by surprise when he exclaimed, “Flame on!”
I was thrilled when Ryan texted me out of the blue, proposing a possibility from two decades ago. With a grin, I replied, “Wow, what a long shot! Absolutely, if it’s you asking.” I’ve always considered Ryan as my trusted friend due to his extraordinary ability to turn any situation into comedy gold. His quick wit and self-awareness make him unbeatable. He has the uncanny knack of making jokes before the audience even thinks of them, so reprising a character with him feels like a guaranteed success.
Ryan Reynolds truly embodies the phrase “turning all to gold,” as demonstrated by his successful work on the Deadpool series. Although some fans might have preferred Chris Evans reprising his role as Captain America, it made perfect sense for him to return as Johnny Storm in D&W. Given that D&W pays homage to the Fox-produced Marvel films of the past, Evans’ comeback was fitting. Following his appearance at San Diego Comic-Con with his co-stars, Evans shared with EW how he put on the iconic blue suit once more. He previously mentioned finding it quite uncomfortable years ago, but it seems the process was smoother this time.
As a fan, I’d describe it this way: In the early films featuring Johnny, Marvel wasn’t fully polished yet. So his costume didn’t need to be flawless. It felt more like, “We get it. We’ve seen this before.” The first two movies were all about precision with numerous meetings and opinions shaping the final product. But this was a more relaxed approach.

That Wild X-Men Cameo In Deadpool And Wolverine, Explained
In summary, the “Knives Out” actor seemed to greatly enjoy revisiting a role that significantly impacted his career. He shared with EW that he cherishes the memories of filming the “FF” movies. At just 23 years old when working on the first film, it was his initial major studio project. As a fan who grew up with those superhero films, I’m pleased to hear he had a good experience playing the Human Torch once more.
It’s unclear if Chris Evans will don the Marvel suit again for an upcoming film. Given that Johnny was mercilessly (and somewhat comically) slain by Cassandra Nova after Evans’ character insulted her, it seems unlikely that he would reprise his role as Johnny. Furthermore, the probability of Evans continuing to portray Captain America is also slim. However, Evans has left a significant mark on the superhero genre with his performances. If he chooses to retire now, then a return as Human Torch could serve as a fitting conclusion to his circular journey within these films.
As a long-time comic book fan and avid moviegoer, I cannot hide my excitement over the latest collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine hitting theaters! The raw energy and wit of Deadpool paired with the unyielding ferocity of Wolverine is a combination that promises an action-packed and entertaining spectacle.
