In a desolate office situated right in the bustling center of Times Square, Chris Skylark launches his first solo exhibition. Featuring 12 impressive works, this exhibit showcases Skylark’s unique fusion of fine art and fashion photography, creating a distinctive middle ground. Organized by Ginevra de Blasio, the event is titled “Swallow the Lake“, inspired by Clarence Major’s 1970 collection of poems. Through themes of achievement and introspection, the artist explores his past experiences in a profound rite of passage.
This collection of silkscreen prints showcases locals from Jamaica alongside famous personalities such as Frank Ocean, Playboi Carti, and Anok Yai in a sequence of close, intimate settings. The artist Skylark skillfully portrays his subjects with bold vulnerability, challenging mainstream culture and the typical image to redefine and create something fresh. The most discreet piece in the showcase is a photographic negative of the artist himself—it’s almost unnoticeable or hard to discern. Instead, he expresses himself more through the images of others, illuminating the truth behind self-portraiture.
