Christina Applegate to Publish Memoir ‘You With the Sad Eyes’ (Exclusive)

Christina Applegate has spent most of her life under the public eye, having started her acting career at a young age on the popular ’80s sitcom “Married…With Children,” where she played the onscreen daughter to Ed O’Neill and Katey Segal. At just 16 years old when the show premiered, Applegate has since appeared in numerous TV shows, films, and even a Broadway production of “Sweet Charity.” However, much of her personal life has remained private. That is set to change as she plans to release her first memoir in March 2026. This exclusive announcement comes from The Hollywood Reporter.

The narrative will delve into Applegate’s life story and lasting impact, beginning with her challenging upbringing in Laurel Canyon during the 70s, tracing back to her initial film experiences, and examining the hardships (abuse, body image issues, among others) that marked her rapid ascent.

Applegate shares that she began writing this book after being compelled to slow down due to her circumstances. Throughout her life, she has been involved in television and film since she was just three years old, a career she enjoyed immensely. However, with MS, the significance of what was once important changed. For a prolonged period, it seemed challenging to find meaning in her experiences, but now, for the first time, she’s found peace in taking a step back and contemplating her life. Filled with the highs and lows, laughter and sorrow that life offers, this book encapsulates the 50-something years of her existence. It may be daunting to reveal so much, but she believes that books have the power to make people feel less isolated. Assuring readers, You With the Sad Eyes will not be a melodramatic portrayal of her life struggles, but it will be an honest account of her journey.

The memoir was purchased from CAA by Little, Brown and Company in a pre-empt for World Rights, with Bryn Clark serving as the editor. As an editor, Bryn Clark stated, “I’m constantly searching for that indescribable sensation of ‘I must have this.’ You can only recognize it when you encounter it, and I immediately knew Christina’s book was that moment when I read her initial sentences.” Clark continued, expressing that Christina addresses the strength in accepting life’s messiness and transience rather than hiding behind the superficial facade of our contemporary world. We have no time to waste on deceptions and pretense.

Applegate recounts her personal journey through her past years, intertwined with her health struggles following the 2021 Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis and learning to accept its consequences. She seeks self-discovery and happiness amidst the loss of her acting abilities. The memoir will be published by Little, Brown and Company, an imprint of Hachette Book Group. Applegate is represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA).
