Christina Chong, who joined Star Trek not too long ago, has left a significant impact with her character La’an Noonien-Singh, and fans eagerly anticipate her comeback in the third season of Strange New Worlds. Intriguingly, I discovered during an interview that she felt somewhat disheartened by the musical episode in Season 2.
The actress, whose highly anticipated return will be seen in upcoming episodes this year on Paramount+, recently appeared on “The D-Con Chamber” to talk about her career and everything related to Star Trek. After receiving praise for her performance in the musical episode “Subspace Rhapsody,” Christina Chong disclosed that she felt disappointed when she first read her character’s scenes. She went into detail about why this was the case:
Was it surprising to you that I felt let down by it? When I presented the concept, I had been enthusiastically advocating for this musical theme from Season 1 – considering that Henry [Alonso Myers] and Akiva [Goldsman] are known for their love of music, I assumed they were already envisioning it. Everywhere I went, I was sharing my vision: ‘Imagine Gorn dancing in tap shoes, with canes and hats!’ In my mind, it was all about La’an and the Gorn tapping away. However, when we received the actual script, I found myself asking, “Where are the glittering costumes? Where is the flair?” Regrettably, there was none of that sparkle in the script.
It’s hard to predict how fans would respond if a Gorn character wearing tap shoes made an appearance in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. After all, discussions have been ongoing about the differences between the original series’ portrayal of the Gorn and their appearance here. If the depiction on screen had been closer to what Christina Chong envisioned, it might have sparked some criticism from fans who prefer a more traditional hard sci-fi approach.
In a different rendition of events, “Subspace Rhapsody” featured Klingons performing a pop song from a boy band, which was defended by Anson Mount in light of its depiction of their shame and embarrassment at singing something so ludicrous for their dignified race. On the contrary, transforming Gorn into a glam-rock band presents an entirely distinct scenario.
More On Star Trek

Starfleet Academy has completed filming for its first season, leaving me with a significant question following the stars’ social media updates.
Christina Chong went on to express that her thoughts on the episode undoubtedly shifted over time. To quote her directly, “My sentiments about the episode certainly evolved.
Initially, I was extremely disheartened. However, as time has passed, I no longer feel that way. At the time, in my thoughts, things appeared to be quite unlike what they turned out to be.
In the episode, La’an’s moments with James T. Kirk deepened her affection for him; however, regrettably, he was from an alternate reality. Consequently, whether or not the original Kirk and La’an will share a romantic relationship remains uncertain. We can only speculate about their past if someone composes a song about it.
It’s confirmed that Paul Wesley’s character, Kirk, will return in Season 3 and also appear in Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Given this continuation, it seems likely that the Paramount+ series is keen on exploring more of Kirk’s storyline as we approach the time when he eventually captains the Enterprise. However, the fate of La’an remains uncertain, a character who has quickly become one of Trek’s most beloved in recent times.
Looking forward to gaining insight into where her character might be going in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, scheduled for 2025 release. I can hardly wait for the official air date announcement, and with First Contact Day approaching on April 5th, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we receive news about the premiere soon.
