Christopher Landon Says Third Happy Death Day Would Have Been "An Epic Apocalyptic Adventure"

As a die-hard fan of the “Happy Death Day” series, I can’t help but feel like Tree Gelbman without her daily cup of caffeine when I hear about the potential third installment. The thrill, the suspense, and the witty humor that these movies bring to the table are a perfect blend for any horror enthusiast.

Will Theresa “Tree” Gelbman ever return for more time loop mayhem in a third Happy Death Day

The chance that writer-director Christopher Landon will conclude his unique slasher trilogy is uncertain at this point. During an interview with SYFY WIRE over Zoom about his supernatural dramedy ‘We Have a Ghost’, Landon mentioned that the ultimate call lies with Universal Pictures, and as of now, he hasn’t received any word from them regarding the matter.

He shared with us that he, along with lead actress Jessica Rothe, and possibly Blumhouse as well, all desire the same thing.

Everything we know about Happy Death Day 3 so far

During his chat with /FILM, the filmmaker shared more insights, acknowledging a brief discussion about potentially expanding the story on Peacock. He hinted, “Perhaps someday,” seeming thoughtful. The intriguing part is that the concept for the third movie isn’t bound by any specific deadline or timeframe. Thus, he could work on it at any point.

Speaking about the subject matter of the final film in the trilogy, Landon gave a tantalizing hint to TheWrap: “The third movie would have been an epic apocalyptic adventure with a touch of horror. That element wasn’t being abandoned. However, we were planning to shift gears and make it even more grandiose.

According to Rothe, Chris Landon seems to have everything planned out regarding the project. However, we’re just waiting for Blumhouse and Universal to organize their details before moving forward. I’m keeping my fingers crossed because I believe Tree [Gelbman] deserves her concluding chapter or a fresh start to wrap up this amazing character and franchise effectively.

Written by Scott Lobdell, the movie ‘Happy Death Day’ adds a slasher element to the conventional time loop storyline. In this film, Blumhouse Productions’ star, Rothe as “Tree” Gelbman, portrays a college student and sorority member who is compelled to repeat her murder until she discovers the true identity of the masked assassin. Lobdell expressed his fondness for the intricate concept behind ‘Happy Death Day’ during an interview with Morbidly Beautiful in 2017, stating that it combines both thrilling and terrifying elements. He also mentioned his hope that future horror movies will follow suit, as entertaining fear while simultaneously making audiences laugh is a unique and unsettling experience.

Landon, who was in charge of directing, handled a pair of horror movies, and for the sequel, he assumed the role of the only screenwriter. Combined, these films earned approximately $189 million globally.
