Heads up, fellow film enthusiasts! The following reflection delves into the gripping second season of ‘Severance,’ specifically the episode titled “Attila.” To fully immerse yourself in this captivating narrative, make sure you’ve got your Apple TV+ subscription all set up and ready to go!
We’ve moved on a few weeks since the ORTBO episode of Severance aired according to the 2025 TV schedule, but I’m still struggling to forget the chilling scenes from “Woe’s Hollow.” The captivating series that has become a favorite for binge-watching continues to keep us Macrodats on our toes. This is especially true because Christopher Walken made a significant comeback in this episode, and we discovered his character goes by the nickname “Attila” (the title of the episode as well). Walken even shared some insights about this nickname with TopMob, and I find myself in agreement with his perspective.
In the episode on February 21st, it’s the first time we see Irving again (excluding his watermelon-shaped head) since his abrupt and permanent leave. However, what stands out more is John Turturro’s character Outie Irv reconnecting with Burt. This encounter reveals some interesting details about the former O&D employee who retired, such as why he left and the fact that he and his spouse refer to each other as “Attila.
According to Riley Utley, Christopher Walken shared his belief that the name holds more significance beyond just being a playful abbreviation of “honey,” as he put it.
During the first season, I was unaware of the events that unfolded in the second season and haven’t watched it yet, but I have read the script and filmed the scenes. When I discovered that my character is called Attila, I don’t recall discussing it with anyone, but there seems to be a certain foreboding quality to it. It’s not something you’d typically name a pet, and there’s just something about it. The name Attila carries an air of intimidation.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but appreciate the depth that “Severance” brings to the table on Apple TV+. Without needing any confirmation, the dark undertones in Christopher Walken’s characters’ nicknames for one another resonated with me profoundly. The implications were chilling and added a layer of complexity that I find truly captivating.
The nickname seems to be a humorous reference to Attila the Hun, the infamous adversary of the 5th-century Roman Empire who gained notoriety for numerous reasons, one of which was his act of killing his own brother to claim sole leadership among the Huns. Isn’t it interesting how this historical figure shares similarities with a recent tale involving fratricide?
As I ponder over the intricate tales of Kier, Dieter Eagan, and the chilling dream of Irving in “Woe’s Hollow,” there’s a lingering question that crosses my mind: Could Burt Goodman somehow be woven into these narratives? Mr. Drummond appeared quite certain that Irving was engrossed elsewhere when he entered Irv’s residence, and hold on, wasn’t that a pineapple I spotted in the kitchen shared by Burt and Fields? Lumon, you are indeed attentive to every detail.
Let’s not overlook the ominous look “Attila” gave when Irv departed that evening, carrying a ham. Some fans speculate there might be more to Burt and Irving’s past than we’ve been led to believe, and Christopher Walken’s response to his character’s nickname has me feeling uneasy (and, indeed, quite frightened) about the situation surrounding Irv’s eye.
New episodes of Severance drop each Friday on Apple TV+.
