John Lindley, who previously served as the cinematographer for both “The Sum of All Fears” and “Pleasantville”, has been chosen to become the next president of the International Cinematographers Guild, taking up a position he left in 2022.
In the election, Lindley secured victory with a total of 1,482 votes. This was more than both the incumbent president and first camera assistant Baird B. Steptoe (who received 591 votes) as well as cinematographer Dave Perkal (with 685 votes). Approximately 35.6% of eligible voters participated in the election.
Or, more casually:
Lindley won the election with 1,482 votes, beating both the current president and first camera assistant Baird B. Steptoe (who got 591 votes) as well as cinematographer Dave Perkal (685 votes). About 35.6% of eligible voters cast their ballots.
From 2020 to 2022, I had the honor of serving as president for a union that represents approximately 10,000 cinematographers, camera technicians, and publicists. When my first term came to an end, I decided not to seek re-election, and Steptoe was elected in my place.
Previously serving as the national assistant secretary-treasurer for the union, Jamie Silverstein was chosen as the new national vice president with no opponents. The current four national officers of the union were reappointed in their positions. Deborah Lipman remains as the first national vice president, Mark Weingartner continues as the second national vice president, Stephen Wong holds onto his position as national secretary-treasurer and Betsy Peoples stays on as national sergeant-at-arms. Selene Preston was selected for the new role of national assistant secretary-treasurer.
Each elected official will hold their position for a span of three years, from June 2025 to June 2028. However, these election outcomes are considered tentative and not final until they are approved by the national executive board of the union during their meeting on June 21st. They will be reviewing a report about the election at that time.
This election signifies a new phase for our Guild, and I am optimistic that our newly chosen leaders within the ranks will offer the insight, background, and steadfast dedication required to steer Local 600 through these challenging times,” stated Alex Tonisson, the union’s national executive director, in a released announcement.
