Citadel’ Season 2 Shocker: Hit Show Pushed to 2026, Amazon Not Impressed!

It was recently reported that Amazon MGM Studios has been spending a lot of money to acquire complete ownership of the James Bond franchise, but James Bond isn’t the only secret agent in their portfolio. Intriguingly, fans have been eagerly waiting news about the second season of the Anthony and Joe Russo-produced show (which has given birth to several spin-offs), and now they finally have some updates – though it might not be exactly what they were expecting.

Based on a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon MGM appears to be dissatisfied with how Season 2 of Citadel is unfolding and the escalating expenses associated with the production. Although filming for the new season was wrapped up in November 2024, with hopes of a Fall 2025 release, the latest information indicates that it may now be delayed until Spring 2026. However, sources have hinted that no definitive date has been decided as yet.

For fans eagerly anticipating new content in the Citadel series, this delay might not be a positive sign. While they’ve found some enjoyment in the franchise’s spin-off shows, they’re still yearning for more from the main series. The reason behind the hold-up – whether it’s for reshoots or rewrites – remains undisclosed. However, given that Citadel is one of Amazon MGM’s priciest productions, they will surely aim to deliver a quality product worthy of its investment when it eventually graces our screens again.

Amazon Bosses Had Faith in ‘Citadel,’ but Admitted It Needed Time

In today’s streaming landscape, it can be ruthless for TV series as they often get canceled following their debut season if they fail to create an immediate impact on the global audience. Yet, some platforms are starting to understand that not every new show requires immediate termination; instead, they may need a bit of breathing room to establish a fanbase. This seems to have been the case with Citadel, which premiered in 2023.

Previously, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke (who has since left the company), stated that “Citadel” was attracting some of the biggest global viewerships ever recorded on Prime Video. Furthermore, Odetta Watkins, Head of Drama, declared it a significant triumph, expressing that the show had been a resounding success. She said:

The show was designed to communicate with a global audience, and it has indeed done so. Not every location will embrace the show equally, but as the franchise expands, I believe its popularity will increase everywhere, even domestically. Over time, you might notice audiences reacting differently.

The creation of Citadel, along with spin-offs Diana and Honey Bunny, added a global touch to the series as fans eagerly anticipated Season 2 of the main storyline. However, there’s uncertainty surrounding Citadel’s future on Prime Video now. Although it’s highly improbable that Amazon will cancel the show outright, the latest delay has caused concern among fans. Unfortunately, it appears that we won’t see the franchise return to Prime Video until 2026, meaning fans may have to grow accustomed to waiting a bit longer.
