In the adventure titled “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33,” the frozen carousel might appear as just another long-lost treasure entombed in the snow, but take a moment to pause before moving on.
Taking a brief diversion close to Monaco’s Train Station leads to one of the game’s most heartfelt side missions, offering a bittersweet payoff while Grandis clings to recollections of happier days.
Once you’re well into Act 2 and set to uncover the world’s secrets, this one’s worth diving into.
How to Find & Fix the Carousel for Grandis
In the throes of Act 2, I stumbled upon an intriguing side mission, only accessible once I had gained complete clearance for Monoco’s Station and welcomed Monoco into my team.

Once the primary happenings conclude, depart via the northern gate. As you traverse along this route, hug the left side of the path, particularly when navigating the tight, snow-covered cliffside trail.
As you progress, you’ll encounter a structure that appears to be an old carousel, covered in frost, and there stands Grandis nearby all by himself. If you engage with Grandis, he will share his longing for the carousel to spin once more – a memory he cherishes from the world before it shattered into pieces.
The structure is encased in three massive chunks of ice, and your task is to set it free. Although it may appear straightforward, regular attacks or weapons will be ineffective against the ice. However, there are two effective ways to thaw it – one method is faster than the other.
To take the longer path, remember to activate the Paint Break skill. You’ll need to discover at least four out of the nine missing Gestrals hidden throughout the world for this. Once you’ve saved enough, travel to Sastro in the Gestral Village to receive the Paint Break activation.
Using this ability, you can smash the frosty crystal structures that resemble paint, and it functions equally effectively against the icy blocks near the Carousel. Once unlocked, simply approach these icy obstacles and break through them using your special skill.

If you haven’t made plans to confront Gestrals just yet, there’s a quicker method available. Simply trigger your Strike skill – the one you usually employ for surprise attacks in battle. On consoles, press R1/RB, while on PC, it’s typically F. Approach the ice blocks and strike with the activated button.
The action may appear delicate, but it could completely melt the ice. When each of the three pieces are destroyed, the Carousel springs to life. After the carousel is functioning, revisit Grandis. A recollection of a young girl will emerge, her hair captivating him even amidst the passage of time.
To express my appreciation for the chance to re-experience that brief joy, I offer you the style of a French Bob haircut, similar to that of Maelle, which can then be utilized for other characters in the future.
Before setting off, don’t forget to inspect the region right past the Carousel for a hidden Lumina collectible in Colour, nestled behind some crates. Proceeding further will take you to the challenging Frozen Hearts zone with powerful enemies and decent XP gains. However, I recommend waiting until Act 3 unless you’re farming experience points.
Instead of just giving a prize, this task unearths a piece of warmth that has been frozen beneath the world’s chill for ages. It’s a subtle kindness for someone holding onto their final recollection, serving as a memento of how the world used to be.
