From a wider perspective, it seems premature for DC Studios to be working on a Clayface movie at this stage. The DC Universe is still finding its footing, with Superman set to hit theaters in July as the inaugural blockbuster, and it’s an odd choice to produce a standalone film about a Batman adversary before the unveiling of the new Batman. The sudden acceleration of the Clayface project over the past few months is likely due to the high regard for the script penned by Mike Flanagan, which leaves me rather perplexed about the latest news regarding its development.
Based on recent reports suggesting backstage adjustments, The Wrap now claims that screenwriter Hossein Amini has been enlisted to revise the script for the movie Clayface. Despite this, director James Watkins remains involved and there’s still a plan to initiate production this fall. Amini is an accomplished writer, famous for penning the script for Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. However, his hiring doesn’t affect my analysis directly. What intrigues me instead is that this decision seems to contradict the development strategy followed by James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOs of DC Studios so far.
A few months past, I joined a gathering of journalists for an exclusive meeting with the filmmakers/producers, where they showed us their advancements on Chapter 1 of the DC Universe. One key point that was emphasized repeatedly was a particular relationship between finalized scripts and production launches. Essentially, if a script isn’t performing well, it won’t be hurried through the development process to meet a specific release date. Instead, they clarified this was why “Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow” is now scheduled for 2026 release, and why “Clayface” has been given top priority.
They enthusiastically praised the script Mike Flanagan had shared with them, particularly regarding its content. Gunn and Safran stated they would have eagerly produced this film during their independent projects such as “The Belko Experiment”. Their strong dedication to it indicated their passion. Although “Clayface” may not be a film that urgently needs to be made at the moment, they’ve planned production and appointed James Watkins as director because they believed it was a project worth pursuing.
In just under three months, I find myself utterly clueless about the situation, and my enthusiasm for Clayface has dwindled significantly. Mike Flanagan is one of my preferred filmmakers in both movies and television today, and I was eagerly looking forward to a grisly, R-rated body horror film within the DC Universe as previously announced. However, this recent news has left me with no expectations at all, which means I have little anticipation or excitement left. The reason behind the production’s status has become a puzzle, and that’s certainly disappointing to say the least.
Although I might not be ready to spearhead a campaign or initiate changes regarding Clayface returning to his original portrayal (since I haven’t read the script), my trust in the creative direction of the DC Universe has definitely diminished, given the current situation. It appears inconsistent and potentially problematic to seemingly discard a previously established development strategy for the third film in the series.
I eagerly anticipate sharing more details about our exciting project shortly. In the meantime, feel free to drop by TopMob frequently as I’ll be posting all the latest scoops about forthcoming DC films and DC television series there.
