As a long-time admirer of Sylvester Stallone and his action-packed cinematic journey, I must admit that the news of Cliffhanger 2 without him leaves me feeling like I’ve just lost my favorite climbing gear – shattered and incomplete. The original film, with its gripping storyline and Stallone’s unparalleled performance as Gabe Walker, was a mountain peak in action cinema that I’ve revisited countless times.
Unfortunately for fans eagerly anticipating Sylvester Stallone’s return in Cliffhanger 2, Variety reveals that Stallone will no longer be part of the project. Instead, Pierce Brosnan and Lily James are set to take on roles previously held by Stallone. The film, inspired by the 1993 action-thriller, is currently being filmed in Austria. Due to significant changes since its initial announcement, there’s some debate whether it can still be considered a sequel.
Initially, Sylvester Stallone was set to reprise his character Gabe Walker, with the plot revolving around him being kidnapped and saved by his mountain-climbing daughter. However, it appears that not much has changed in the storyline since Pierce Brosnan is now replacing Stallone. Previously, Ric Roman Waugh was announced as the director for the sequel, but he’s no longer attached to the project, and Jaume Collet-Serra is stepping in instead. The script by Mark Bianculli has been replaced with a new one penned by Ana Lily Amirpour. The reasons behind Stallone leaving the project are unclear at this time; you can find more information on Cliffhanger 2 below.
Experienced mountaineer Ray Cooper (Bronson) runs a high-end chalet in the Dolomites along with his daughter Sydney. During a visit from a billionaire’s son, they fall prey to a group of kidnappers. After seeing the attack, Ray’s daughter Naomi (James), who is still grappling with the aftermath of a past climbing mishap, manages to escape. To rescue her family, she must conquer her anxieties and battle for survival.
Who Else Will Star In Cliffhanger 2?
With the filming of “Cliffhanger 2” now officially started, several new faces have been unveiled to join the cast for the upcoming sequel. Among them is Nell Tiger Free, who has just come off a successful run in “The First Omen” this year. Additionally, Franz Rogowski from “Passages”, Shubham Saraf of “Shantaram”, Assaad Bouab known for his role in “Franklin”, Suzy Bemba of “Poor Things”, and Bruno Gouery who has been seen in “Emily in Paris” will also be appearing.
Given the upcoming release of Cliffhanger 2, described as a “father-daughter spin on Die Hard,” it’s natural to wonder: Will audiences be interested enough to watch it? A significant part of what made the original so beloved is the charisma of Sylvester Stallone, and while Pierce Brosnan was outstanding as James Bond, when we hear the name Cliffhanger, it’s Sly that comes to mind first.
It might be wiser to give this new production a different title instead of using the original’s, as diehard fans have been anticipating a sequel for over 30 years. While we expect it to be a quality movie, calling it “Cliffhanger 2” could evoke disappointment, especially with Stallone not involved. The addition of Brosnan and the film’s pursuit of a theatrical release are promising, but the initial impression might still lean towards a straight-to-video feel. Fingers crossed that it can recapture the excitement of the 1993 version to avoid being a major letdown.
