‘Clooney Smelt The Best.’ The Batman’s Robert Pattinson Got Real About Trying On ‘All The Different Cowls’ And How ‘Strange’ The Experience Was

The iconic character, The Dark Knight, consistently has new Batman films and series in development, and this trend continues unabated. However, among all the upcoming projects, the one creating the most buzz is Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves preparing for the release of “The Batman: Part II.” Before Pattinson puts on the cape and cowl again for the 2027 movie, he shared his unique encounters with the Batsuits used in Tinseltown’s past.

Previously, it was known that Pattinson performed a screen test for “The Batman” wearing Val Kilmer’s Batsuit; however, we were unaware that he had attempted to wear various cowls from previous Batman films. As Pattinson revealed when asked about the smell of his Batman cowl:

This item is made of leather, but it’s not just that – it’s a duality, as you wear a mask made of leather, yet feel perpetually anxious. Leather is naturally porous, absorbing emotions and scents quite vividly. During my audition for Batman, I had to test various cowls [the masks worn by actors playing the role]. Even those from 20 years prior retained the distinctive scent of each actor who’d worn them before. It’s a bit eerie, isn’t it?

The topic emerged in an interview with Esquire, marking the launch of the latest Dior Homme fragrance, a role Pattinson has represented since 2012. In the magazine, Pattinson mentioned that the scent of his leather cowl immediately reminds him of playing Batman, particularly because it stirs feelings of “anxiety” he experiences while donning it. He further disclosed that he’s had the opportunity to wear all previous Batman cowls and found this peculiar since each one carried the unique scent of the actor who spent extensive time in them. Additionally, he commented:

> “Each cowl had a distinct aroma of its respective actor.”

I think probably Clooney smelt the best.

Didn’t everyone find that response unexpected? George Clooney simply seems to radiate an appealing scent, doesn’t he? When we consider the Batman films sequentially, the actors mentioned would be Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck. This is quite a remarkable lineup of highly acclaimed and adored actors. It’s rather peculiar that Pattinson claims to know what they all smell like now since he wore each of their Batsuits. That’s a strange tradition or ritual, isn’t it, for an actor to do?

In 2019, Robert Pattinson was tipped as a leading contender for “The Batman” before filming commenced early in 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie took longer than expected to complete. The end result, which Pattinson had requested to be portrayed as both socially awkward and somewhat agoraphobic, was finally released in 2022. As of now, the second installment from director Matt Reeves is in the pre-production phase, but Robert Pattinson has recently revealed that he’s aware of its plot and finds it quite exciting.
