As a long-time observer of American politics and a person who has seen my fair share of ups and downs, I must say that the election results have left me with a heavy heart. Van Jones‘ emotional plea on CNN resonated deeply with me, especially his empathy for those who dared to dream and now find themselves facing rejection.
CNN’s Van Jones showed a somber and extremely worried response upon realizing that Donald Trump was nearing victory against Kamala Harris, potentially regaining the presidency.
On Tuesday evening, the television news analyst appeared live during the network’s election discussion group, expressing his view that a Trump resurgence would be a “terrifying scenario.” He also demonstrated a deep understanding and compassion for Black women who backed Vice President Harris, as well as immigrants and transgender youth.
Jones expressed concern about individuals who aren’t part of any elite group, saying they are in pain tonight. He mentioned African American women specifically, as they may have some understanding about being belittled and having their financial aspirations squashed. Instead of finding success, they are experiencing disappointment again. This rejection is painful for them. They had high hopes that this time, one of their own might be recognized, but once more, they are met with rejection. Tomorrow morning, they will find it difficult to hold their heads up with pride. Despite doing everything they could, the situation will likely be tougher than it should have been for them.
Jones continued: “Not only are some suffering tonight, but there are many others who will feel this pain as well. If you identify as transgender or if you’re a parent of a trans child, your struggles have been exploited for political gain, and that’s not right. Tomorrow, we’ll encounter people without documents at the dry cleaners, people who fear for their jobs because they don’t have papers, and they’re terrified tonight. It’s simple to dismiss this as a problem of the wealthy and powerful, but it’s not them who will bear the brunt of the consequences. Instead, it’s those who dared to dream today and now face a nightmare – these are the people who deserve compassion, support, and understanding. These are the ones who will ultimately suffer the consequences, regardless of what President Trump decides.
The rest of the CNN panel respectfully remained dead silent during Jones’ comments.
The reactions to Trump’s win are similar among Hollywood celebrities, as evidenced by filmmaker Adam McKay’s comments: “One might have thought that lying about Biden’s cognitive abilities for two years, refusing to hold an open convention for a new nominee, neglecting public healthcare, promoting fracking, aligning with the Cheneys, and endorsing a year-long conflict in Gaza wouldn’t be a successful strategy. I assumed liberals were known for their intelligence. But it seems they merely blindly applaud the superficial appearance of modern Democratic Party, which is essentially a spectacle wrapped in The New York Times fonts. It appears that now is the time for the stale insiders and careerists to fan out after the election, blaming Russia and third-party candidates. This should certainly resolve the issue.
During The Daily Show’s election night special, a clearly dismayed Jon Stewart concluded with a message of optimism: “Rest assured, this isn’t the final chapter.
Later today, Harris will deliver her concession speech at her former university, Howard University.
