Coach Ben’s Heartbreaking Fate in Yellowjackets Season 3

Spoilers ahead for the most recent episode of Yellowjackets Season 3, titled “Did Tai Do That?”.

Over the course of just a handful of years, I’ve come to adore the show “Yellowjackets” on TV. Streaming through Paramount+ with a subscription, this Showtime original boasts an exceptional ensemble cast and leaves many intriguing mysteries unanswered, like the true identity of Pit Girl. Although I’m thoroughly enjoying the current season, the way they’ve handled Coach Ben’s character portrayed by Steven Krueger has left me feeling quite upset.

In Yellowjackets Season 3, there was a leap forward in time, yet it was evident that the soccer team continued to accuse Ben of setting the cabin ablaze. Despite trying to keep his distance, Ben ultimately revealed himself as a hero when he rescued Mari from a pit and protected Shauna, Van, and Akilah from poisonous gas in his cave. They held a makeshift trial for him on charges of arson and attempted murder, thankfully Lottie managed to prevent them from taking his life after Akilah’s vision. However, this didn’t mean Ben’s ordeal was at an end.

In the climax of “Did Tai Do That?”, Amanda resorted to drastic measures and severed Steve’s Achilles tendon, making it impossible for him to walk after the plane crash. This additional misfortune adds to his suffering, and I can’t help but feel deeply sympathetic towards him. It seems like a cruel twist of fate that surpasses the pain of death in some aspects.

Despite Steve appearing as if he might meet his end in Season 3 of Yellowjackets, it seems now that the writers are determined to keep him alive against all odds. Lottie firmly believes he’s the key to their return home, yet instead, he finds himself weakened, defeated, and immobile. Contrary to rumors, Steve was not responsible for setting the cabin ablaze or attempting to harm the girls during that incident. I truly think his innocence is justified.

In a deeply moving scene, Coach Ben stood trial, with Steven Krueger delivering an impactful soliloquy about his character’s profound affection for the girls and remorse over his shortcomings. Despite numerous deadlocks among the “jury”, Shauna managed to persuade the Yellowjackets of his guilt. However, he won’t face execution; instead, it appears he will continue to be their captive.

In the series, Yellowjackets, viewers have observed Ben’s mental state deteriorating progressively. His psychological turmoil started with the amputation of his leg, followed by hallucinations of his ex-boyfriend due to hunger. He also grappled with the guilt of not being able to protect Shauna when they turned to cannibalism, which led him to isolate himself from the other girls. Furthermore, during their cave dwelling, he was depicted as conversing alone.

It’s bad enough that Ben was made to feel guilty, but what Melissa did to him is completely unacceptable. Watching his story unfold in the upcoming episodes on Showtime Sundays, set for the 2025 TV premiere lineup, will undoubtedly be challenging.
