Cobie Smulders' Latest Comments About MCU's Maria Hill Has Fans Riled Up About Secret Invasion All Over Again

As a seasoned Marvel fan with a decade-long investment in the universe, I must admit that the death of Maria Hill in Secret Invasion left me feeling like I had just watched Nick Fury’s dog get run over – again. The character, played brilliantly by Cobie Smulders, was a stalwart presence in my MCU adventures and her sudden, unceremonious demise felt like a gut punch.

Inquiring about an actor’s involvement in a future Marvel production can be like handling a delicate matter due to the studio’s emphasis on confidentiality. However, this hasn’t dampened fans’ eagerness. For example, Cobie Smulders has featured in close to a dozen Marvel productions as Maria Hill, the former head of S.H.I.E.L.D., and her character met an untimely end in Disney+’s “Secret Invasion,” leaving the fanbase upset. Nevertheless, speculation about her possible return continues, and the discontent over “Secret Invasion” persists.

At Terrificon on August 17th, I stepped up to discuss my journey from superhero cinematic adventures to the successful network sitcoms like “How I Met Your Mother” and more. During the panel led by Joe Stuber from Comic Book Central, the topic of returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) came up. While I expressed enthusiasm for the possibility, it would require a significant overhaul in the storyline, as I pointed out. In essence, I said that if the story is right and the narrative aligns with my character’s development, I’d be open to rejoining the MCU.

I’m keen on returning, but I’m unsure about Marvel’s plans for the future, especially regarding my character.

It’s not likely that Maria Hill would have a natural fit in upcoming Marvel TV series such as “Agatha All Along” or “Daredevil: Born Again.” However, with the Russo brothers returning for more Avengers films featuring Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom as the main villain, there is room for Maria Hill’s character to exert her influence in the expanding Marvel universe.

If only Maria Hill hadn’t been shockingly slain by Gravik during the premiere of Secret Invasion, a scene that still leaves fans seething just at the mention. Even though Cobie Smulders’ response was generally upbeat, it fueled a fresh round of criticisms over how her character’s demise unfolded. Here are some reactions that the MCU veteran’s comments elicited:

  • They really should bring her back considering her character died on that fan-made not canonical tv-series called Secret Invasion or something like that… – @Jesse_L58
  • the way no one knows that Maria literally fucking d!ed in a series that no one gaf about… just erase it and bring her back – @vanniloner
  • Killing her off was such a huge slap in the face to me and to those who grew up with her. And if they were gonna kill her off why not do it in a big screen movie instead of a freaking Disney plus show 💀💀💀💀 – @JonathanGedeon4
  • Soooo…it sounds like #SheHulk was/is better than #SecretInvasion and we should ignore the whole series and Cobie Smulders should return to the MCU and we’re gonna act like she never died? Is that correct? – @AlexLampley
  • I still can’t believe they did her this way, especially in that crap show. Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) deserves better!! – @ClayBallenger
  • I think everyone is willing to simply banish Secret Invasion from MCU canon no questions asked at this point – @PaulTassi
  • They could probably bring her back via a clone or something. Or just retcon it to where the Maria Hill we saw die was just a skull. God I didn’t like secret invasions at all. It was supposed to be something good but completely ruined and stifled. Redo the whole thing. – @kaisenz_

seldom does the Internet unanimously align in such a manner, but this instance appears to be one where most vocal Marvel Cinematic Universe enthusiasts feel both the actress and character were unfairly treated by that on-screen demise. One might find it challenging, even painful, to navigate social media platforms seeking opinions that defend or praise Secret Invasion, as they are few and far between.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but notice the mixed reactions towards Maria Hill. Some fans are puzzled about her popularity given her minor role in many major storylines. There’s even a group who jokingly speculates that Marvel will eventually explain it away by using some multiverse nonsense or revealing that the Maria Hill from ‘Secret Invasion’ was actually a Skrull all along.

It’s worth noting that some viewers remain uncertain if the character truly perished in that series. The unpredictability and debatable circumstances surrounding the scene have sparked numerous fan speculations suggesting that Maria might still be alive within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite general consensus holding her as deceased.

Additionally, it’s noteworthy that after Maria Hill’s apparent on-screen demise, Cobie Smulders portrayed the character in two more instances; these were animated series. She voiced her character in an episode of Marvel’s What If…? and another episode of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. It remains undecided whether she has recorded any further voice-acting performances for upcoming seasons or episodes from different projects.

You can watch the entire “Secret Invasion” series if you have a subscription to Disney+, but it doesn’t seem like many people are eagerly waiting to do so.
