As a long-time fan of the Karate Kid franchise, I must say that the latest twist in Cobra Kai Season 6 has left me utterly stunned. Mr. Miyagi, the beloved sensei and mentor, apparently had a darker side! This revelation has sent ripples through the world of LaRusso and his dojo comrades.
The following article contains mild spoilers for Cobra Kai Season 6.
The creators of the “Cobra Kai” series, Hayden Schlossberg, Josh Heald, and Jon Hurwitz, left fans globally stunned when they unveiled a surprising twist in Season 6, Part 1: It turns out that Mr. Miyagi, who was believed to be the world’s best teacher, has a hidden dark side. Although this revelation didn’t significantly impact the initial five episodes, the team plans to delve deeper into Miyagi’s past. This doesn’t necessarily imply a prequel spin-off expansion, but given the show’s popularity on Netflix, unexpected events could transpire within their headquarters.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the creators delved into the integration of Miyagi’s backstory within Daniel LaRusso’s narrative in Season 6, Part 1. In this segment, we witnessed Daniel unearthing a hidden chest beneath the dojo. This treasure trove contained various mementos and some personal items belonging to Miyagi. A news article and a blood-stained headband were crucial clues revealing that LaRusso and Chozen, the antagonist turned ally in our series, stumbled upon a shocking revelation about Miyagi’s past, hinting at something suspicious and unanticipated.
Schlossberg explains that this revelation significantly altered everyone’s view of Miyagi, including LaRusso. Prior to this, Miyagi was perceived as a kind man who resorted to violence only in very rare instances.
Since the debut of this series, we’ve found it intriguing to delve into Daniel LaRusso’s perspective regarding the Miyagi character. Throughout each season, Miyagi has been a constant presence. As we approach each new season, we ask ourselves: how can we infuse the essence of Miyagi into this season?
In planning for Season 6, we decided that Daniel should experience intense struggles, which seemed fitting with our past seasons and provided us with a grand finale we desired. Essentially, his storyline became the primary focus for this season.
How Can Miyagi’s Backstory Shift Cobra Kai’s Tone?
As Miyagi and Daniel head to Barcelona for the Sekai Taikai tournament, Miyagi’s tumultuous past may cause Daniel to reconsider his perspective. In the first part, it is revealed that Miyagi had a boxing gym and was on the run from the law in the 1940s due to his violent past. However, it isn’t immediately clear how this will impact the series. The main change we notice so far is Daniel’s traditional values becoming more flexible as he comes to realize that the peaceful nature of karate may not be entirely authentic.
In the revamped franchise, Miyagi isn’t heavily featured, so there’s potential for showrunners to delve deeper into his background by creating a prequel spin-off that explores his origins and the development of the legacy we’re well-acquainted with. However, it’s not wise to transform Miyagi into an antagonist, as this wouldn’t be a successful choice. Unless his past actions could negatively impact the current generation in some way.
When Will Parts 2 and 3 of Cobra Kai Season 6 Be Released?
Initially aired on July 18, 2024, Part 1 of the series was quickly devoured by viewers who watched all five episodes within just four days. This rapid consumption led to nearly 15 million views, making it Netflix’s most-watched series for an entire week and garnering an additional 9 million views. Though releasing the series in three parts might have appeared risky for Netflix, it seems they are eager to maximize profits during the show’s final season.
In Part 2 of the series “Cobra Kai”, five episodes are set to be released on November 15, 2024. Furthermore, Part 3 consisting of another five episodes is scheduled for release in 2025, although the exact date has not been confirmed yet. It’s likely they won’t release it too close to Netflix’s popular series “Stranger Things”, which will also conclude in 2025.
