Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 Ends With A Fun Karate Kid Callback You May Have Missed

Contains spoilers for “Cobra Kai” Season 6, Episode 14 and 15 — “Strike Last” and “Ex-Degenerate”

Over the course of the series “Cobra Kai”, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) have had a challenging journey, but in the end, they learn to heed each other’s advice and truly listen. During the Sekai Taikai competition, Johnny himself seeks guidance from Daniel and steers Cobra Kai to claim the title of the world’s best dojo. With a fresh outlook, Johnny rebuilds Cobra Kai by collaborating with Miyagi Do and Daniel to offer their students a comprehensive and balanced karate education.

At the conclusion of their lunch together, Johnny steps away momentarily to use the restroom, leaving Daniel alone. During this time, a fly begins buzzing around. The memory of Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) telling him that a person who can capture a fly using chopsticks possesses great power and influence resurfaces in Daniel’s mind. However, his aspirations are dashed when Johnny returns, squishing the fly with his hands, followed by a recitation of the Cobra Kai slogan: “No Compassion.

If the flashback clips from the initial film didn’t already hint at it, this scene is a clear reference back to one of “The Karate Kid“‘s most memorable moments: Daniel’s initial success in catching flies with chopsticks, which leaves Mr. Miyagi doubting his beginner’s luck. Over the course of “Cobra Kai”, Daniel’s relationship with Mr. Miyagi has been a significant aspect. He’s learned to accept Mr. Miyagi’s image, and uncovers that there’s still wisdom left for him to learn from his late mentor.

Mr. Miyagi was no criminal

In Season 6 of “Cobra Kai,” Daniel finds himself preoccupied with the possibility that his mentor, Mr. Miyagi, concealed a hidden, sinister past. As the season progresses, we discover that Mr. Miyagi’s past is not as pure as it seemed – he may have fatally wounded an opponent during the Sekai Taikai. This revelation leaves Daniel grappling with the truth – he even experiences a troubling dream where his mentor returns from the dead to brutally defeat him in a karate competition, during which Mr. Miyagi tells Daniel that he cannot bear the weight of such dark secrets.

In Episode 13 titled “Skeletons”, Daniel has a dream about Mr. Miyagi and expresses his disappointment for leaving him without guidance. However, in the dream, Mr. Miyagi counters that success or failure isn’t the essence. Eventually, Daniel comprehends that his instructor was fallible and human, but this does not diminish the value of the wisdom he imparted. Addressing Johnny, Daniel says, “Teachers might appear omniscient, yet they are merely humans.

In Episode 15, Daniel gains further resolution as his mother Lucille (played by Randee Heller) shares a significant secret about a necklace of pearls. This heirloom was passed from Mr. Miyagi’s grandmother to Mr. Miyagi, who then gave it to his deceased wife. Eventually, the pearls are in Lucille’s possession and she passes them on to Samantha (Mary Mouser). In a touching scene, Lucille discloses that when Mr. Miyagi’s wife perished in an internment camp, he tracked down and confronted the thief who had stolen the pearls. “He did what he needed to do,” Daniel ponders, thus reinforcing for himself that his complex mentor possessed a heroic side as well. This poignant moment serves as a fitting conclusion to the series “Cobra Kai”.
