The animated series CoComelon will be moving to a new streamer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been confirmed that Disney+ will air the well-liked preschool program, beginning in 2027, as Netflix chose not to extend the license for CoComelon.
According to insider reports shared with The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix decided not to renew the CoComelon license as viewership numbers had significantly dropped. The show first appeared on the streaming platform in 2020, but despite releasing four new seasons in 2024, its audience shrank by almost 60% from the first half of 2023 to the second half of 2024, as per Netflix’s semi-annual reports.
Netflix will continue to exclusively stream its spinoff Cocomelon Lane, as well as Blippi.
Over the years, children’s shows such as CoComelon have played a significant role in driving Netflix’s growth, accounting for approximately 15% of its total viewing time. Shows like Sesame Street, Ms. Rachel, Gabby’s Dollhouse, Peppa Pig (two versions), Care Bears, and Hot Wheels Let’s Race are also available on the platform.
The children’s series, known as CoComelon, hails from Moonbug Entertainment (a subsidiary of Candle Media). It is based in the make-believe town of Cocomelon and chronicles the daily adventures of baby JJ and his siblings, which involve nursery rhymes, playtime, exploration, and education. This popular show initially debuted on YouTube.
Bloomberg was first to report the news of the show’s move.
Just this month, it was revealed that the popular children’s animation will transition to the big screen following a successful live tour and streaming run. Moonbug Entertainment and Flywheel Media have given the go-ahead for an animated CoComelon feature film, set to hit cinemas in 2027 through Universal Pictures.
