Codenames players have already completed three million challenges and more since launch

  • Codenames, the spy-exposing board game gone-mobile, has just released
  • And only 1300 hours later, players have already completed millions of challenges
  • That, and created over 500k spymaster scenarios

As a board game enthusiast with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that Codenames has proven to be one of the most captivating and engaging games to grace the digital realm since its September 10th launch. In just 1300 hours, players have completed an astounding three million challenges, created over half a million spymaster scenarios, and engaged in more than seven thousand matches per day!

After discovering that Codenames, the intriguing spy-vs-spy board game, had garnered significant popularity upon its launch on September 10th, I wasn’t entirely taken aback. However, when the developers at Czech Games Edition presented the raw data of its success, it truly left me in awe.

As reported by its creators, since its debut, players of Codenames have accomplished over three million challenges in the 1300+ hours that have passed. Additionally, they’ve generated more than half a million different spymaster scenarios and finished more than seven thousand matches daily. This game has also earned the distinction of being the highest-rated adaptation from CGE among board games.

Originally developed by Vladimír Chvátil, Codenames involves teams of spies competing against each other. One member on each team acts as the spymaster, providing clues for their fellow players to guess the corresponding codenames and uncover their secret agents. The challenge lies in identifying the correct words while steering clear of enemy agents, bystanders, or a lethal assassin.

Spy vs Spy

It’s intriguing to see the raw figures here, since we often only hear “We’ve had x number of downloads!”, which indeed sounds impressive, but it can be somewhat unspecific. Nevertheless, it’s evident that people are deeply engaged with Codenames, and having personally played it in its physical form, I can confirm that it belongs to the rare category of board games that not only stirs up a lot of excitement but also manages to be enjoyable regardless.

Codenames is available now on iOS and Android.
