Although Matt Reeves’ Batman movies may leave fans with some patience-testing gaps, the anticipated release of The Batman Part II tentatively slated for October 1, 2027 (five years after the initial film), has found a way to make that wait less daunting. The HBO original series The Penguin, debuted in September 2024, unfolds directly after the events of The Batman and chronicles the ascent of Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) as he orchestrates daring power plays within Gotham’s criminal underworld. The series has enjoyed immense popularity, although discussions about another season are underway, Farrell isn’t necessarily in a hurry to don the bodysuit once again.
After winning the Screen Actors Guild Award for his portrayal of Oz, Farrell mentioned in an interview with Marc Malkin from Variety that he’s intrigued by returning to the world of The Penguin. However, he doesn’t feel a pressing need to immediately jump back into the character. He expressed a desire to maintain high-quality work while also acknowledging the physical and mental strain the role imposed on him.
I’m not interested in doing it again. I don’t have a strong desire to repeat the experience, especially if it ends up being a watered-down version of what people perceive it as, primarily. For now, I’m content with leaving it behind. If they come up with an idea that complements Matt Reeves’ cinematic universe and it seems promising, I’d consider it, but for the time being, it’s not something on my mind.
‘The Penguin’ Season 2 Would Be a Massive Commitment for Colin Farrell
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I initially understood that The Penguin was intended to be a standalone limited series. Yet, the captivating eight-episode production has proven to be a hit, gathering an impressive viewership and garnering numerous awards and nominations. Colin Farrell, in particular, has been honored with a Golden Globe, a Saturn Award, and now a SAG for his chilling and nuanced portrayal of the enigmatic Batman villain.
Regarding a possible second season of “The Penguin”, James Gunn, who is involved in the project, expressed uncertainty, stating, “We’re not sure yet… There are many factors at play, with perhaps the most significant being Colin himself.” In the behind-the-scenes accounts for both “The Batman” and “The Penguin”, it was frequently noted that a substantial amount of time was required for Colin Farrell to transform into Oz Cobbe due to the extensive makeup and prosthetics needed to create the large, disfigured mobster.
It’s no wonder Farrell would insist on a compelling tale if he’s to take on the role of Oz. After all, the storyline should match or surpass the one from the initial season. As for The Penguin’s part in The Batman Part II, it remains to be seen how that might influence a potential second season. For the time being, fans can catch up on all eight episodes of The Penguin on Max to keep them entertained until Matt Reeves’ crime saga sequel hits the screens.
