Colin Farrell Shares More Details About The Penguin's TV Show Timeline, And I Hope It Means We're Getting These DC Comic Characters In Live-Action

As a die-hard DC fan, I am beyond excited for the upcoming live-action series “The Penguin,” starring Colin Farrell and set to premiere on HBO and Max in 2024. The prospect of diving deeper into Oswald Cobblepot’s complex and intriguing character is a dream come true, especially since his storyline in the latest Batman film left us with so many unanswered questions.

After saying goodbye to “Gotham” and its unconventional portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot as the Penguin in 2019, fans can look forward to a new live-action adaptation of the character. This upcoming crime drama, titled “The Penguin,” featuring Colin Farrell, is set to premiere on HBO or Max for subscribers. The events of this series will directly follow those of Matt Reeves’ successful 2022 film “The Batman.” However, be prepared that not all elements of the story will remain in the present day.

Despite being a notable enemy of Batman in comics lore, Oswald Cobblepot, portrayed by Farrell in the new series, is climbing (or perhaps falling?) the ranks in Gotham City’s criminal underworld. In an interview with EW, Farrell shared that the show will not only focus on Cobblepot’s contemporary conflicts with Cristina Milioti’s Sofia Falcone, but it may also delve into the past, potentially introducing beloved comic book characters to live-action television. This is what Farrell had to say:

In the Batman movie, I thoroughly enjoyed portraying my role and was thrilled about the opportunity to explore this character’s psyche and history in depth for an extended period of time – approximately eight hours. The significance of backstory is prominent in the TV series as well.

As a dedicated fan of Gotham City and its intricate web of characters, I’ve spent countless hours immersed in the rich lore of this captivating universe. With the latest announcement of Colin Farrell’s portrayal of the iconic Penguin, my excitement knows no bounds. However, the tantalizingly vague revelations about his character’s backstory have left me pondering the possibilities.

I’d Love To See The Penguin’s Kids In The TV Show

If Paul Reubens were still alive in 2023, I would have been among the most vocal advocates for him reprising his role as The Penguin’s father in future productions of “Batman” and “Gotham.” Although I am excited about the possibility of a new actor taking on this part, it is not one that deeply resonates with me based on the original sources.

Across his family tree, there are Addison and Aiden Cobblepot, his son and daughter, eagerly emulating his ways. They may even plan surprise attacks from the sidelines.

In issue #126 of “Batman,” Chip Zdarsky and Belén Ortega introduced two new characters as part of Catwoman’s “Two Birds, One Throne” mini-arc. These characters became essential in Tom King and Rafael de Latorre’s ongoing “The Penguin” series, with Addison standing out as the more deserving Cobblepot descendant. Consequently, if the “The Penguin” TV show decided to omit Aiden, it wouldn’t result in significant consequences.)

The Penguin: Great Depictions Of The DC Villain In Batman Movies And TV Shows

Addison Cobblepot would bring an intriguing element to the live-action series as Gotham City is known for preserving and ruining family legacies. As the youngest offshoot of this criminal dynasty, she could add depth to the storyline without requiring Penguin’s children to be main cast members. In fact, it would be an exciting twist if we learned that Oswald had kids before rising to power in the underworld, and they unexpectedly reappeared during a crucial moment, like when he was attempting to seize control from the Falcones.

A possible element that could introduce Addison and Aiden into “The Penguin” storyline is by disclosing the identity of their mother, which has yet to be revealed in the comics. Oswald’s romantic history is a complicated matter; in the comics, he was depicted as having a late wife named Penny and a shady lover in King and de Latorre’s series. However, it remains uncertain if these relationships would be worth exploring further for a TV adaptation.

Although I don’t truly believe that all of this will happen, I am anticipating some unexpected twists in the eight-episode run of the spinoff, which was created by Lauren LeFranc. Frankly, what I’m most excited for is catching glimpses of Robert Pattinson’s Batman among the Cobblepot family members. And if Barry Keoghan’s Joker intends to make an appearance again, that would be a wonderful bonus.

The history of Batman’s creations frequently delves into Bruce Wayne’s troubled childhood to help audiences understand his psyche. However, with so many retellings of his origins existing already, it promises an exciting and innovative experience when The Penguin takes us back in time (an intriguing venture for viewers, but perhaps not for Batman’s foes).

One of the forthcoming DC TV programs, titled “The Penguin,” is scheduled to premiere simultaneously on HBO and Max in September 2024.
