Colin Jost And Michael Che Explain Why They’re Not The Head Writers Of SNL Anymore

As a devoted fan of Saturday Night Live, I can’t help but admire the journey of Colin Jost and Michael Che, two exceptional talents who have graced our screens as co-anchors of Weekend Update for years. Their transition from head writers to their current roles is a testament to their versatility and commitment to maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

For quite a while, Colin Jost and Michael Che have been the co-anchors of the Weekend Update segment on Saturday Night Live. Beyond their roles at the desk, they’ve also held significant positions within the renowned sketch comedy show. In fact, both Che and Jost worked as head writers for the series before deciding to step down. Recently, they shared some details about why they no longer occupy those important positions. As one might expect, the reasons are quite personal.

2018 Emmy co-hosts, Colin Jost and Michael Che, alternated as co-head writers for different periods. Starting from 2012 to 2015, it was Colin Jost who assumed the role after joining SNL in 2005. He resumed his duties again from 2017 up until 2022 when Michael Che became his co-head writer. Later, both comedians appeared on The Howard Stern Show, where they reminisced about their past roles. Upon discussing his tenures, Michael Che also paid tribute to Jost’s work.

Colin Jost expressed that it seemed as though they had been away for a few years now, since he had been involved for roughly eight years or more and collaborated with someone for about five. However, over the past couple of years, they hadn’t been actively engaged in their work due to being pulled in various other directions.

Michael Che: Colin excels at it and has consistently led the way in the writers’ room, whereas I was struggling to keep up with the task.

According to the star of “How to Be Single,” additional factors outside of work played a role in his choice to step back from a high-profile position. He pointed out that the demanding nature of the job was putting a strain on his personal life, which includes his marriage to Scarlett Johansson. In the YouTube video, he elaborated on how this affected his self-care routine.

Apart from that, I’ve been cutting down on work for self-preservation reasons. Previously, I would nap at work twice a week during extended 24-hour shifts, but Scarlett suggested, ‘Go home,’ so I decided to prioritize my health and sleep for some hours instead of staying all night.

It’s not hard to guess that the circumstances weren’t simple considering Colin Jost and the well-known Avenger have a child together, Cosmo, born in August 2021. Interestingly, when this happened, Jost didn’t feel he was burdening his family members excessively.

It seemed somewhat unjust that those who had been consistently performing heavy writing tasks and managing re-write databases for a year, while we hadn’t, might perceive our situation as unfair. This was more or less the discussion we had with Lorne.

Although they are no longer the main scriptwriters, Colin Jost and Michael Che continue to play significant roles at SNL through their segment, Weekend Update. Occasionally, their humor can cause a stir online, particularly when they exchange inappropriate jokes during their annual swap. This year’s swap included a harsh remark about Scarlett Johansson. Additionally, they are involved in other projects, such as a comedy special on Peacock that highlights emerging comedians. In summary, while they have stepped down from their head writing roles, they still have numerous endeavors keeping them busy.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “When Saturday Night Live Season 50 kicks off on September 28 at 11:30 p.m. ET, you’ll find me, and the two anchors, back at the Weekend Update desk. And if you want to catch up on past episodes, all you need is a Peacock subscription!
