As a gamer with a penchant for absurdity and a touch of nostalgia for the golden age of SNL, I can’t help but be captivated by the whimsical tale of Colin Jost and Pete Davidson’s ferry escapade. In my gaming life, I’ve made some questionable purchases that left me wondering what I was thinking at the time (looking at you, 10th expansion pack for Skyrim). But buying a boat? That takes the cake!
Colin Jost and longtime SNL comrade Pete Davidson share an exceptionally tight bond – so much so that they made a rather unusual joint investment several years back. Intriguingly, these two humorists splurged a substantial $280,000 on a boat (yes, you read it correctly). Since then, both the motivation behind their acquisition of the vessel and their intended use have been topics of discussion. More recently, Jost has shed light on Scarlett Johansson‘s response to what he now terms as “the absolute dumbest” purchase they ever made.
In truth, plenty of us have probably indulged in spontaneous shopping sprees, be it for apparel, accessories, or gadgets. But I bet not many can boast about impulsively buying a large yacht. That’s exactly what Colin Jost did back in 2022, and he seems to regret that choice deeply. He confessed to People magazine that it was the “least-well-thought-out” purchase he’s ever made. Moreover, he shared how he rationalized his decision then:
In my years of making purchases, I must admit that this one takes the cake as the most imprudent and ill-conceived decision I’ve ever made. Looking back, it seems like a sheer miscalculation, driven by a flawed justification. The way I reasoned with myself was that for the amount of money we were investing, considering only the square footage, this purchase was essentially equivalent to acquiring an upright building measuring 65,000 square feet – quite a bargain if you found the right location for it. However, in New York City standards, this price per square foot was quite attractive. But oh, how I wish I had known then what I know now!
Previously, Pete Davidson mentioned that he and Colin Jost were under the influence when they purchased a 60-year-old ferry. But later on, Jost clarified he wasn’t high; instead, it was alarming to him that he completed the transaction while completely sober. What’s more surprising is that the boat required significant repairs, and its potential value could have been realized with an immediate business plan. However, it seems that Davidson and Jost have been hesitant in devising such a plan for the vessel.
How can you casually break the news to your partner that you’ve unexpectedly purchased an oversized boat that isn’t seaworthy? Much like the actor from ‘Coming 2 America’ did in his interview, the conversation turned out to be quite interesting. Scarlett Johansson, who tied the knot with the SNL star in 2020, reacted immediately upon hearing the news by asking a straightforward and “fair” question. As for her current feelings, she’s reportedly been stressing a particular point to her husband and his friend:
She essentially asked, “Hold on, is this your boat now?” A perfectly reasonable question. It seems she’s beginning to understand its importance, perhaps even seeing it as a significant and intriguing aspect for both of you. She suggests treating it with seriousness, aiming to make the best out of it because, whether good or bad, it will undeniably reflect on you. However, since we’re comedians, we don’t mind.
As a fan following the story, it seems like Colin Jost and Pete Davidson couldn’t care less about their “Titanic 2” project these days. Back in the early part of this year, there were rumors that they intended to transform the ferry into an entertainment hub filled with attractions for visitors. However, despite being humorously nicknamed “Titanic 2”, the boat hasn’t been very active, though some renovations have taken place.
On September 28, as Saturday Night Live kicks off its 50th season, don’t miss Colin Jost back at the Weekend Update desk. Catch up on his and Pete Davidson’s most hilarious moments from previous episodes by subscribing to Peacock and streaming them.
