As a seasoned gamer of both virtual worlds and the real one, I must confess my heart skipped a beat upon hearing about COMME des GARÇONS reissuing their iconic chairs from the 80s. My gaming avatar has always been an art aficionado with a penchant for minimalist design, so these chairs are right up my alley!
COMME des GARÇONS announced they will re-release an uncommon series of chairs originally designed by its founder, Rei Kawakubo, back in the 1980s. These chairs were only produced for a brief period starting in 1983 and, due to their scarcity, have become highly sought-after collector’s items.
These chairs feature a straightforward geometric design and a wire frame reminiscent of a fence for their seating area, which embodies the minimalist aesthetic commonly associated with COMME des GARÇONS style. The model is available in colors such as red, black, and silver, and an additional version with a wooden seat is also offered as an alternative.
Among all of Kawakubo’s chairs, this particular piece boasts one of the simplest structures, stripping down the fundamental form of a conventional chair to its bare essentials, with no embellishments. In contrast, designs from her 80s-inspired furniture collection showcase more decorative elements such as spiraled tubular steel accents, chained backrests, and rounded corners.
15 designs by the designer were exhibited at gallery A1043 in Paris back in 2017, and subsequently appeared at Maniera’s showcase during Collectible Brussels in 2018.
Once again, the exclusive chairs will only be found at COMME des GARÇONS Paris. For further information, potential buyers are encouraged to reach out to shop@comme-des-garcons.com.
