Caution: Major plot reveals about the series ‘Con Man’ follow. If you haven’t seen this Netflix true crime documentary yet, I strongly recommend watching it first before proceeding.
I have a strong interest in true crime stories, often watching far too many shows and movies on the subject. However, despite my extensive exposure to documentaries about cults, kidnappings, and murders, I assumed that the 2025 Netflix original Con Mum wouldn’t leave me feeling so emotionally affected. To my surprise, it turned out to be much more distressing than I anticipated. This documentary, focusing on a man reuniting with his long-lost mother, only to get ensnared in a web of deceit and broken promises, was indeed upsetting, proving to be a far greater emotional toll than I could have ever imagined.
After taking a few days to reflect on “Con Mum” and organize my thoughts on one of the most unsettling and frustrating documentaries I’ve seen from the 2025 movie lineup thus far, I feel compelled to discuss it and share why it left me feeling so incredibly sad.
Again, spoilers ahead…
First Off, Con Mum Was A Riveting Documentary From Start To Finish
From the moment I hit play on “Con Mum,” I found myself drawn in by the captivating tale of London pastry chef Graham Hornigold being contacted by a woman purporting to be his long-lost mother after 45 years. As I watched, I kept wondering where this narrative would lead, and I was eager to discover the answer. This documentary surpasses all expectations for compelling viewing – it’s not just a con, but an extraordinary journey that you won’t want to miss.
For the following hour and a half, I found myself utterly captivated as I sought to unravel the truth behind Dionne’s narrative. As each layer was stripped away, more astonishing revelations emerged – such as her being the daughter of a former sultan from Brunei, or elaborate plots masterminded by an enigmatic 85-year-old woman. It soon became evident that her opulent lifestyle was a façade constructed on falsehoods and money earned through hardship by others (with additional tales of deceit involved). I found myself on the brink of anticipation, eager to piece together all the puzzle pieces.

The Whole Time, I Was Waiting For Dionne To Not Be Graham’s Real Mom
Throughout much of “Con Man,” I found myself anticipating the moment when it would be unveiled that Dionne and Graham weren’t related as we often see in documentaries or films about con artists. I had assumed that this would be another instance where the central character turns out to be someone other than they claimed to be, but alas, it didn’t happen.
It seemed clear that Dionne was an accomplished swindler who managed to find a talented pastry chef online, researched his background to discover he was adopted as a baby and hadn’t maintained contact with his birth mother. Previously known for executing large cons, it appeared she had set her sights on Graham as another target to exploit for her own gain before eventually moving on. Her manipulation even extended to conning his friends and speaking negatively about him behind his back. It struck me that this was just another calculated move by a cunning grifter, ready to vanish after causing chaos in the life of an unsuspecting victim.
But it was something far worse…

My Heart Sank As Soon As The DNA Results Came In. Like, How Could You Do This To Your Kid?
The shocking revelation in “Con Man” that Dionne was indeed Graham’s mother, with a 99.9% certainty, struck me hard, like a massive wrecking ball. It was heartbreaking to discover that this globe-trotting swindler, with countless victims, was unknowingly draining the lifeblood of his own family – money, future, security, and even his relationship with his wife and son.
Pondering as this situation unfolds, I found myself asking: How on earth could you deceive your child like this? It’s hard to fathom how someone could perform such an act and continue living as if nothing is amiss. And to falsely claim cancer as a means to extract more money from him and those around him… As a parent, I can’t imagine resorting to deceit, exploitation, or financial manipulation of my children – that’s not the role of parenthood.

At Times, I Was So Angry With Graham, But Then I Thought Long And Hard About It
In truth, I must confess that I grew quite frustrated with Graham in many parts of the novel “Con Mum“. It felt as if he was intentionally ignoring the warnings from his wife and friends when they suggested he was being manipulated by his mother. Concurrently, I found myself questioning how someone could keep believing one deception after another, particularly since Dionne’s tales appeared to be too good or even outright falsehoods.
Initially, I found it hard not to be annoyed with Graham due to the apparent deception, but as I delved deeper into understanding his background – particularly his long-term and recent hardships, which included a sudden disruption in his relationship with his mother – I couldn’t help but feel sympathetic towards him. It felt unfair of me to hold a grudge against him for what seemed like being duped into leaving his wife and child behind.

I Thought Maybe There’d Be A Happy Ending, But Nope…
In the story Con Mum, there were instances where I expected Graham to repair the fragments of his life and relationships, managing to keep his family intact. However, it turns out that this doesn’t occur, particularly with regards to his family situation. Although Graham was able to maintain his thriving career in London’s culinary world, he and his partner, Heather Kaniuk, chose to part ways.
I was truly disheartened witnessing Graham’s chance at life with Heather and their son, now residing in New Zealand, slip away, all because of the discord sown by the events surrounding Dionne. I had hoped he would forge a significant bond with his mother, but alas, it seemed to cost him dearly in the end.
Despite leaving me feeling downhearted after watching Con Mum, I wholeheartedly believe it’s an exceptional documentary on Netflix, making it well worth your time to explore.
