Constantine 2 Gets Hugely Exciting Update at SDCC

As a long-time fan of Keanu Reeves and his iconic portrayal of John Constantine in the 2005 film, I’m thrilled to hear that there are plans for a sequel. The first movie, despite receiving mixed reviews initially, has since gained a dedicated following due in part to Reeves’ magnetic performance and the intrigue of the character’s dark and complex backstory.

After Keanu Reeves’ unexpectedly positive announcement about the progress of “Constantine 2,” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who was involved in the initial film, has confirmed that a script for the sequel to the comic book movie is indeed being developed. During Comic-Con, di Bonaventura shared (as reported by Comicbook.com) that the script is nearing completion and expressed excitement about delving deeper into “soul-searching, wild, and somewhat religious” themes in the highly anticipated sequel.

As a seasoned screenwriter and film industry veteran, I can tell you that having a well-known movie star attached to a project is both exciting and challenging. The script for our latest production is currently in development, and it’s a thrilling experience to be a part of this team, especially since the leading actor, who has made a significant impact on Hollywood, has expressed interest in reprising his iconic role.

Introduced in 2005 and inspired by the DC comic “Hellblazer,” the initial “Constantine” film presents Keanu Reeves as an unassuming man endowed with a remarkable ability. He perceives the presence of good and evil spirits within our world. However, this gift is a burden he cannot bear. After being condemned to eternal suffering in Hell, Constantine seeks redemption for his misdeeds. As a result, he assumes the role of an investigator, delving into the mysteries of the supernatural and occult.

For some time now, there has been great anticipation among fans for the potential release of Constantine 2. However, the situation may have grown more complex with recent developments at Warner Bros. and the DC cinematic universe. The latter is currently being helmed by James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are gearing up to kickstart their revamped DCU on the big screen with a new Superman reboot in 2025. It’s been confirmed that an “Elseworlds” franchise is also ongoing, featuring projects like The Batman and Joker: Folie à Deux. The question remains, will the concepts of Keanu Reeves and Lorenzo di Bonaventura align with the new directions being taken by Gunn and Safran?

Reeves openly expresses great enthusiasm for the character John Constantine. He shared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that he’s putting in a lot of effort to bring this project to life.

At first, the answers were a firm no. But then they began to soften, becoming perhaps a maybe. This may lead us to consider hiring a writer and paying for a script, which is currently in the works.

Initially, the first portrayal of Constantine by [Constantine’s name] was met with varied reactions. However, his reputation has since grown significantly, largely due to the massive fanbase Keanu Reeves has amassed through his role in the successful John Wick series. At present, we are unaware of the plot for the sequel. Nevertheless, Tilda Swinton recently dropped an intriguing hint regarding Keanu Reeves’ part in the upcoming story.

Apologies for the disappointing news. I haven’t been privy to any specifics regarding this sequel, beyond the fact that it’s supposedly in development. If things are progressing as usual, I don’t believe Keanu Reeves (the actor rumored to play Gabriel) will be involved just yet. There was a whisper about this casting choice circulating, but its authenticity is uncertain.

Would you prefer Keanu Reeves to reprise his role as Constantine in future DC projects? Or do you think a fresh start with a new actor for the character in the expanded DC Universe is more appealing?
