Convicted Ozy Media Founder Carlos Watson to Be Focus of Doc Debuting Weeks Before Sentencing (Exclusive)

As a long-time gamer who has witnessed countless trials and tribulations in the virtual world, I find myself deeply intrigued by the real-life drama unfolding in the case of Carlos Watson. The line between reality and gaming often blurs for me, but this situation is as gripping as any high-stakes mission or epic quest I’ve encountered.

A documentary focusing on the trial of Carlos Watson, one of the co-founders of Ozy Media who could potentially spend up to 37 years behind bars after being found guilty of fraud in July, is currently in production.

Under the direction of filmmakers Candice Conley and Brenae Perkins, the documentary titled “The Troubling Case of Carlos Watson: Whose Son is Next?” premieres on YouTube this coming Tuesday, preceding next month’s sentencing. This documentary delves into aspects of the case that led to the conviction of Carlos Watson and Ozy Media by a federal jury on July 16, for securities fraud conspiracy, wire fraud conspiracy, with an additional conviction of identity theft against Carlos Watson himself.

A trailer on The Hollywood Reporter reveals footage of interviews with individuals claiming that Serena Williams received an unjust trial. Additionally, the footage implies that U.S. District Judge Eric Komitee had financial investments in four companies believed to be victims in the fraud case at hand. In a motion filed last month, Watson’s lawyer suggested that the judge should have stepped away from this specific case due to potential conflicts of interest.

As a passionate advocate for justice, I find myself aligning with Juror Number 5 from Watson’s trial. In a recent interview hinted at in the trailer, he expresses his deep conviction, saying, “I can’t help but feel a profound sense of injustice that has been perpetrated, and I consider myself a part of the solution.

A Watson supporter adds in the trailer, “He deserves to have a fair trial. We need our brother.”

Watson is a journalist and television host who launched media company Ozy Media with co-founder Samir Rao in September 2013. Watson previously worked as an MSNBC anchor and CNN contributor and hosted interview program The Carlos Watson Show on YouTube.

In 2021, Ozy, recognized for its platform offering news and cultural articles, ceased operations after it was exposed in the New York Times that its founder, Rao, had posed as a YouTube executive during a fundraising conversation with Goldman Sachs.

In court, it was claimed by the defense that Watson falsified financial details about Ozy, including traffic statistics, and concocted contracts while offering deceptive revenue predictions. However, Watson maintains his innocence and could potentially spend up to 37 years in prison; his sentencing is scheduled for December 13. Previously, Rao and Suzee Han, the chief of staff, had admitted guilt and testified on behalf of the prosecution.
