Alvernaz was a vital player in this smuggling network that Fernandes managed to disrupt.

Who is Alvernaz Alemao? Goa’s most notorious smuggler

During the early ’90s, Alvernaz Alemao played a significant role in a well-known gold trafficking incident that took place in Goa. He is the sibling of Churchill Alemao, a notable political figure and former Chief Minister of Goa. In May 1991, it was claimed that Alvernaz was part of an illegal gold transportation scheme.

Churchill Alemao climbed the ranks from being a tea server to holding the position of Chief Minister of Goa, demonstrating the core values of democratic progression.

Apart from him, his siblings Ciabro Alemao, Joaquim Alemao, and the deceased Alvernaz Alemao hailed from humble beginnings yet ascended to become highly affluent and influential figures in Goa, embodying the spirit of capitalism and its benefits.

In a significant incident, Alvernaz found himself at the heart of a major issue when he was apprehended by Customs Officer Costao Fernandes for attempting to illegally transport gold. This altercation that ensued resulted in Alvernaz sustaining injuries which proved fatal later on.

The event triggered a protracted court battle, during which Costao Fernandes faced accusations of murder due to his involvement. Later on, the Supreme Court exonerated him from all allegations, acknowledging that he was attempting to halt illicit trafficking.

Alvernaz Alemao’s tale has become a significant chapter in Goa’s historical fight against smuggling, demonstrating the challenges that law enforcement encounters while attempting to halt illicit operations like this one.

Fans’ excitement for Costao, a new project directed by Sejal Shah, has grown even more intense following the recent sneak peek. As of now, it’s set to stream on ZEE5, but the exact launch date remains undisclosed.
