This article contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Episodes 5 & 6.
The highly anticipated series “Daredevil: Born Again” shattered expectations by releasing not one but two episodes simultaneously on Disney+. Unlike other live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) shows, which may have had double premieres or finales, this is the first time two episodes are aired consecutively in the middle of the series. Moreover, the fifth episode subtly suggested an unexpected MCU team-up: Daredevil and Ms. Marvel.
In contrast to his history of working alongside various superheroes, such as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist in The Defenders, and Frank Castle/The Punisher this season in Daredevil: Born Again, it’s quite unexpected that Daredevil might team up with Ms. Marvel. This possibility arises after their alter egos crossed paths in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Matt Murdock’s appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law where he had a romantic entanglement with the titular character. However, given the unpredictable nature of storytelling in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it could also be another hint toward the formation of the Young Avengers.
Ms. Marvel Doesn’t Appear in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ But Her Presence Is Felt
In a unique twist, Daredevil: Born Again subtly connects me, Daredevil, with Ms. Marvel by means of an intermediary character – Yusuf Khan, who happens to be the father of Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel. During one of my visits to his bank, Yusuf finds himself in a hostage situation due to a robbery, and I manage to save everyone without donning my Daredevil suit, thus keeping my secret identity under wraps from him. As a token of gratitude, Yusuf invites me for dinner at his home in New Jersey, where he introduces me to his family, including his daughter Kamala, whom he speaks highly of and has shared many stories about with me.
Previously within this episode, Yusuf boasts about New Jersey featuring its own superhero known as Ms. Marvel. However, Matt Murdock remains unaware of her existence. Despite not being allowed to show it to his daughter, Yusuf’s desk at work is adorned with a unique Funko Pop! figure of Ms. Marvel, hinting at her popularity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In the meantime, Yusuf discreetly mentions his daughter Kamala who texts him while he’s working. It’s March 17, 2027, or Saint Patrick’s Day, and Kamala happens to be vacationing with friends in California during spring break.
Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil, is extended an invitation to dinner, potentially setting up an encounter with Kamala Khan. This meeting could unveil Kamala’s hidden persona as Ms. Marvel. Meanwhile, since Kamala is in California during the events of “Daredevil: Born Again,” this situation might be another tantalizing hint towards the formation of The Young Avengers team.
Is Ms. Marvel Recruiting The Young Avengers?
It’s quite likely that Kamala Khan is currently in California, spending time with friends during her spring break. This is suggested as Bruno, her friend from Ms. Marvel, has moved on to study at Caltech, located in Pasadena, California. Yet, the ending of The Marvels hinted that Kamala may be assembling a team of young superheroes, which seems to align with the MCU’s version of the Young Avengers.
In the closing scenes of “The Marvels”, Kamala Khan mentions Ant-Man’s daughter, Cassie Lang, who lives with her family in San Francisco. This hint at the end of the movie suggests that Kamala might be traveling to California, potentially to recruit Cassie Lang and catch up with her friend Bruno, despite the six-hour drive between Pasadena and San Francisco possibly eating into her spring break. The fifth episode of “Daredevil: Born Again”, set a year later (2026), would take place approximately a year and half after Ms. Marvel first appeared in New Jersey, during fall 2025.
Since The Multiverse Saga commenced, Marvel appears to be hinting at the emergence of The Young Avengers. Characters like Billy and Tommy Maximoff from WandaVision, Eli Bradley in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Kid Loki in Loki, Kate Bishop in Hawkeye, America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Riri Williams in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a grown-up Billy/William Kaplan/Wiccan in Agatha All Along, and Ms. Marvel herself have been introducing younger heroes into the MCU.
Although Marvel Studios has been hinting at a Young Avengers project for four years now, they haven’t officially confirmed anything, whether it’s a movie or a series on Disney+. The hint at the end of The Marvels came closest to confirming its development, but since the film marked Marvel Studios’ first box office disappointment, the future of this project is uncertain.
There’s speculation that The Young Avengers could potentially unite in the films “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” possibly paving the way for their own standalone series after the Multiverse Saga wraps up. However, this is merely wishful thinking at this stage. As a result, Kamala Khan’s California trip could be interpreted as a hint towards the Young Avengers or simply a reference to her friend Bruno, as either scenario is plausible.
Ms. Marvel and Daredevil Team-up Now on the Table
As fans anticipate the arrival of The Young Avengers, the appearance of Ms. Marvel in Daredevil: Born Again hints at a potential return for Ms. Marvel, keeping hopes alive that more can be done with the character Iman Vellani, who has been one of the MCU’s standout casting choices. With her outstanding portrayal as Ms. Marvel, it would be wise to further explore her character and perhaps have her appear in Daredevil: Born Again’s second season, making it an ideal opportunity.
Initially, the upbeat demeanor of Ms. Marvel may seem at odds with the grittier atmosphere of Daredevil: Born Again. However, one of the joys of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is blending characters with diverse tones, providing creators an opportunity to develop them further and present them in fresh perspectives. Placing Ms. Marvel within a more realistic, mature narrative after the celestial backdrop of The Marvels could be captivating. Moreover, her character dynamics with Matt Murdock could prove intriguing, especially considering his recent return to action as Daredevil following a lengthy retirement.
Ms. Marvel’s optimism might serve as a much-needed reminder for Daredevil about the reasons he fights, providing him with renewed purpose in the dark storyline of Daredevil: Born Again.
In a fresh perspective, Ms. Marvel offers insight into how Daredevil perceives himself. Generally, series like “Daredevil: Born Again” and the Defenders Saga avoid using the term ‘superhero’. Characters such as Daredevil or White Tiger are often regarded as vigilantes by the general public instead. It’s intriguing to ponder what sets a figure like Daredevil apart from more traditional superheroes, such as Sam Wilson’s Captain America or Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel.
In the series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil, may have helped Jennifer Walters, Ms. Marvel, realize her superhero potential and use it for good purposes. In the upcoming storyline Daredevil: Born Again, Ms. Marvel could be the character who helps Matt Murdock remember his role as more than just a vigilante, serving not only as a meeting of two characters but also as an important development for both.
If “Daredevil: Born Again” adheres to its comic book roots, New York City may become a dangerous city for superheroes and vigilantes under Mayor Wilson Fisk. As such, Daredevil might find refuge in Jersey City, potentially leading to his encounter with the Jersey City Hero. With “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2 set to premiere prior to “Avengers: Doomsday,” a collaboration with Ms. Marvel could be an effective strategy to re-introduce the character ahead of the highly anticipated MCU team-up movie.
