- Can a Bond Arise from ‘Kraven the Hunter’s Failure?
As a long-time film enthusiast and critic, I must say that watching the downfall of yet another superhero movie has become as predictable as the rising sun. However, in the case of “Kraven the Hunter,” it’s not just the storyline or the special effects that have left me feeling disappointed but rather the potential wasted on the talented Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
The fate of an alternative Hollywood franchise, notably not connected to the Spider-Man universe, could hinge on the performance of Kraven the Hunter. This franchise, infamously known for films like Morbius and Madame Web, is reportedly closing temporarily with this week’s new release. However, while the future of the Spider-Man Universe is already set, Kraven the Hunter could potentially determine who will be our next James Bond character. Yet for actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, this development might not be favorable.
In the latest installment of Sony’s Spider-Man universe, “Kraven the Hunter,” recently hit theaters, but the reception has been far from favorable. Critics have panned it, and its box office earnings are projected to be among the franchise’s lowest, suggesting that “Kraven the Hunter” may turn out to be a financial and critical dud. This unfavorable outcome is not ideal for actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is reportedly vying for the role of James Bond. One might wonder if the poor performance of “Kraven the Hunter” could impact his chances to play 007 and order his martini.

‘Kraven the Hunter’ Set to Make Disappointing History
Upon its debut, “Kraven the Hunter” is poised to create headlines as the film with the lowest opening in the Sony Spider-Man series. With projected earnings of $13-$15 million, it’s likely that this figure will be lower than even the disappointing opening of “Madame Web”. This isn’t the kind of news Sony is used to hearing about this franchise anymore. Apart from the Tom Hardy-led “Venom” series, the rest of Sony’s Spider-Man spin-offs have been met with ridicule and disdain.
2022’s “Morbius” movie turned into a meme sensation due to its poor performance. The ridicule of the film was so widespread that Sony tried capitalizing on it by re-releasing “Morbius,” making it the first film to bomb twice. Unfortunately, 2024’s “Madame Web” didn’t fare any better. Critics found it too dull even for unintentional enjoyment, earning a mere 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Remarkably, predictions suggest that “Kraven the Hunter” will underperform even more at the box office.
As the premiere of the movie drew closer, it seemed like an impending gloom. Following the double letdowns of “Morbius” and “Madame Web”, by the time the first trailer for “Kraven the Hunter” was unveiled, fans were at their wittiest, voicing their reduced anticipation with a touch of irony. They swarmed Sony’s YouTube page, filling the comments with sarcastic compliments for the movie’s supposedly fantastical scenes. This strategy was employed to mock both “Madame Web” and “Morbius”, hinting that perhaps the audience wasn’t ready to embrace “Kraven the Hunter”.
Additionally, Sony’s decision to step back from the Spider-Man universe could have significantly impacted this movie, as there seems to be no indication of further installments in the series. Originally expected to earn between $20-$25 million domestically, the film’s box office predictions have dropped dramatically to a potential peak of $15 million, which would mark the poorest opening weekend for the struggling franchise.
Can a Bond Arise from ‘Kraven the Hunter’s Failure?
To this point, “Kraven the Hunter” has received a 14% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie was criticized for being lackluster, confusing, and underdeveloped, with a weak villain and subpar dialogue that critics deemed cheesy and disappointing. However, it’s important to note that these issues are not a reflection of the film’s lead actor, Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Despite the movie’s shortcomings, Taylor-Johnson received high praise from critics who appreciated his charisma, physical prowess, and fitting portrayal of the character. Some even went as far as saying that he deserved a better role. Yet, the question remains: Could a Bond film provide the ‘better’ opportunity that would truly showcase Taylor-Johnson’s potential?
If the reports are true and Aaron Taylor-Johnson might play James Bond, it’s not a movie I’d prefer. Fingers crossed, it won’t impact his chances. The makers of the Bond series should take solace in knowing that the problems with Kraven the Hunter appear to be related more to the script and production rather than Taylor-Johnson himself. Similar to his past roles, Taylor-Johnson exudes leading man charm, delivers sharp wit to handle scripted dialogue effortlessly, and boasts the physical prowess to execute stunts seamlessly. Moreover, the actor’s impressive body of work has made him well-known among many viewers. Though it seems that these qualities won’t help Kraven the Hunter, they may shine in his next project.
