Now, the movie’s director, Matt Reeves, is expressing his thoughts on this topic.
While attending the 2025 Golden Globes, Matt Reeves—known for his critically acclaimed vision of Gotham’s brooding vigilante—addressed the possibilities of his Dark Knight entering the DCU amid a red-carpet interview with Josh Horowitz. In a clip posted to Horowitz’s Instagram, the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes filmmaker shared insight into his current creative focus and weighed in on whether Pattinson’s Batman made sense in Gunn and Safran’s ambitious interconnected DC plans:
In essence, it boils down to whether it’s logical or not. What I find fascinating is that I was eager to narrate a specific tale, one we’ve dubbed “The Epic Crime Saga,” which is the primary focus of our endeavor, and having the opportunity to bring that narrative to life has been crucial.
In “The Batman,” directed by Reeves, viewers were introduced to a darker, more realistic portrayal of Bruce Wayne’s early years as the Caped Crusader. The movie’s unique atmosphere, character depth, and noir-influenced aesthetic set it apart from contemporary superhero films. For his next installment in the series and spin-offs like HBO’s acclaimed “The Penguin,” the director is continuing this style. Consequently, based on what we know about “The Batman 2,” it appears that the emphasis remains on creating a self-contained Gotham City-focused universe.
In his chat with Josh Horowitz, the Cloverfield director commended Gunn and Safran for granting him freedom to construct his unique Gotham-based universe, unhampered by interference.
James and Peter have been exceptionally cooperative regarding that matter, giving us the freedom to proceed. As for what lies ahead, I’m unable to predict at this moment. All I can say is that I’m fully focused on getting The Batman – Part II off the ground and making it truly extraordinary, which, needless to say, is our top priority.
Currently, the seasoned director behind the “Felicity” series is completely dedicated to producing a follow-up that matches the exceptional standard established by the initial movie. For now, any talks regarding a possible collaboration (crossover) are being postponed until a later time.
The possibility that Robert Pattinson’s role as Batman will continue in the standalone universe created by the director of Pallbearer doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a negative outcome. Matt Reeves’ interpretation of the Dark Knight has carved out its own distinctive niche within the realm of DC comic characters, providing an original and engaging portrayal of this pop culture legend.
