Could The Night Agent Continue Without Gabriel Basso? The Actor And Showrunner Share Their Honest Thoughts

The Night Agent, upon its debut in March 2023, swiftly became one of the must-watch series on Netflix for binge-watchers with a subscription. Now, eager fans are merely days away from the resumption of the action-packed series for Season 2, featuring Gabriel Basso reprising his role as Peter Sutherland. However, there’s been speculation about whether The Night Agent could carry on if Basso were no longer the main character. Both the actor and showrunner Shawn Ryan have weighed in on this topic.

What Gabriel Basso Said

During an extensive interview discussing his career and personal life, Gabriel Basso shared that although he’s dedicating himself fully to acting at present, he doesn’t feel like a meaningful contributor to society. He further mentioned his intention to eventually leave the entertainment industry. When asked about the timeline for this departure, he responded it might happen within five or ten years.

It’s going to happen more quickly than you might think. Youth often comes with an abundance of energy, and I believe it’s important for me to channel that energy into acts of service to establish myself as a credible individual.

It’s important to clarify that Gabriel Basso is currently appreciating his latest acting ventures such as the Clint Eastwood-directed “Juror #2” (available on Max) and Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled Netflix movie with Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson. However, he harbors desires for other facets of life, like acquiring a stonemason’s license and establishing a non-profit to enhance police training. Therefore, although there’s a chance Basso might reconsider leaving acting, the question is more about “when” rather than “if.

At present, Gabriel Basso is filming “The Night Agent” Season 3, which gives us hope that Peter Sutherland will survive through Season 2. However, it’s not guaranteed that there will be a Season 4 for his character, considering the Netflix series continues if it does so until then. As Basso stated:

It’s likely that I’ll need to step away for a bit. It seems like Peter is taking care of some critical decisions, and I believe it wouldn’t be fair to the audience if he always appeared perfectly fine at the end of each season.

Later, he expressed that “nobody appreciates an invincible figure,” and that he wouldn’t mind if Peter Sutherland’s character met a similar fate as a character like Captain America, suggesting it might not be out of the question for him to be written out of the story at some point.

What Shawn Ryan Said

As a dedicated film enthusiast like Shawn Ryan, I’ve pondered over the prospect that one day, our leading man in “The Night Agent” might require a fresh face to carry the story forward. Yet, he remains receptive to this possibility, expressing his openness to the change.

In other words, ‘The Night Agent’ isn’t simply titled ‘The Gabriel Basso Show.’ This implies that if Gabriel Basso ever wishes to pursue another role, there will likely be a new character stepping into the role of night agent, as the title is not exclusively associated with him.

It’s uncertain if the show “The Night Agent” will continue to captivate audiences with a new lead actor replacing Gabriel Basso when Season 4 or any future season that introduces a change in status quo arrives. For now, fans can enjoy Peter Sutherland-led adventures in Season 2 and the upcoming Season 3. Regarding Season 2, Luciane Buchanan reprises her role as Rose Larkin, and she’ll be joined by other cast members such as Amanda Warren, Berto Colon, Louis Herthum, Arienne Mandi, Brittany Snow, Teddy Sears, Michael Malarkey, Keon Alexander, Navid Negahban, and Rob Heaps, among others.

As a thrilled fan, I’m excited to share that I’ll be glued to my screen on Thursday, January 23rd, as The Night Agent returns for its second season on Netflix!
