As a long-time fan of the Counter-Strike franchise, I can confidently say that the release of CS2 has been nothing short of a game-changer. Having played every title since the original back in 2000, I’ve seen the series evolve and adapt over the years, but CS2 takes it to a whole new level.
Story Highlights
- Counter-Strike 2 is the successor of CS: GO, released by Valve last year in September.
- As per a new report, Counter-Strike 2 has made Valve the most money for the first half of 2024.
- It’s raked in over $610 million dollars in revenue, sprinting just ahead of Arrowhead’s Helldivers 2.
In the realm of top-tier first-person shooter games, it’s worth mentioning that Helldivers 2 has thrived significantly on Steam this year, generating over $450 million in total earnings from January to June 2024. Nevertheless, Counter-Strike 2 has surpassed these impressive figures, climbing to the top spot as Steam’s most financially successful game to date, with its earnings showing a substantial increase.
GameDiscoverCo, a site dedicated to analyzing the gaming industry, compiles and shares this list in their weekly newsletters.
Given that Counter-Strike 2 is a game developed by Valve Corporation – who also own Steam – it’s reasonable to infer that the earnings from this game aren’t split, and there’s no need for royalties to be distributed among other parties. In essence, CS2 has been generating substantial revenue in the recent six months or so.
It’s unclear if the constant influx of skins and cosmetics for CS2 trades, leading to a loop of trading, is the primary cause. However, as long as there’s ongoing income from it, I can’t definitively say one way or another.
Incidentally, take a look at the comprehensive analysis written by my coworker Shahmeer regarding CS2 skin designs. This will provide you with valuable insights into the “impactful history, economic, and moral consequences that CS skins have exerted on the game.”
With Global Offensive No More, CS2 Is The Future Of The Franchise
With the arrival of Counter-Strike 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive effectively became obsolete. Valve Corporation has chosen to discontinue the game in favor of its successor, which they’ve upgraded significantly. At this moment, it remains uncertain whether there will be a Counter-Strike 3 or any similar developments in the future.
Incidentally, it’s worth mentioning that the technology from CS2 is also proving useful in other realms of tech. In fact, the latest Neuralink chip, designed to stimulate brain activity, was recently used by a patient to play CS2. That’s quite remarkable, don’t you think?
