As a cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that Alexandre Aja is a director who knows how to deliver pulse-pounding suspense and visually striking films. His latest offering, “Never Let Go,” is no exception, especially with the powerhouse performance of Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry at its center.
I had a conversation with filmmaker Alexandre Aja prior to the premiere of his latest movie, “Never Let Go,” making it his 10th film so far. Starring Halle Berry, this movie is sure to deliver chills, much like his previous successful films such as “The Hills Have Eyes” and “Crawl.” Interestingly enough, Aja has also been tapped to direct the eagerly awaited sequel of “Crawl,” as he hinted during an interview with MovieWeb.
He expressed his eagerness to revisit the world of Crawl, as he often finds himself pondering over his films long after their completion.
Given that everything is wrapped up and concluded, yet with all the chaos and turmoil worldwide, each image I encounter sparks a new idea for an engaging and terrifying scenario. If given the chance to return there, it would undeniably be an entirely unique experience.
Halle Berry Is the ‘Anchor’ of Aja’s New Film
In the interim, admirers of Aja’s breathtaking artistry can also savor a powerful performance in his recent work, Never Let Go, which stars the Academy Award winner from Monster’s Ball (2001) herself.
Aja commented, “She is the pivotal figure, the steadfast foundation of the film.” He continued, “In essence, she serves as the backbone of this family. However, she’s not just one-dimensional. She embodies two contrasting aspects. On one side, there are the twin brothers. Yet, she too carries a complex nature, presenting both a benevolent and a sinister side.
Aja continued on Berry’s performance:
“The first time we met, I could sense her concern about ensuring I truly grasped the intricacies and contradictions of her character. She didn’t want compromises made for the sake of portraying this on screen accurately. Over time, our partnership has been nothing short of extraordinary.”

Never Let Go Is ‘Something Close to a Fairytale’
In typical Aja fashion, get ready to be captivated by a visually stunning movie, as the filmmaker shared with us that he started from scratch in its creation. He emphasized that what stood out for him, beyond the fear and suspense, was the chance to build a world – almost like a classic, dark fairy tale. This is what he had to say about Never Let Go.
In my interpretation of the story, I found it deeply symbolic – from the hanging rope to the colors, every detail seemed deliberately chosen. Consequently, I aimed to weave a richly layered setting where the forest would almost become a character in its own right, contributing significantly to the overall narrative.
From Lionsgate,
Never Let Go
will be released in theaters on Friday, Sep. 20, 2024.
