Crayola Studios and Hallmark Reviving Rainbow Brite for New Generation With Film, TV Project

As a 90’s kid who grew up with the vibrant hues and boundless optimism of Rainbow Brite, this news has me hopping with joy! Forty years after its debut, the magical world of Rainbow Brite is about to burst back onto our screens in an exciting reimagining that promises to inspire a new generation.

Rainbow Brite is coming back.

Crayola Studios and Hallmark are reviving the well-loved children’s brand by producing a feature film and television series. This project is expected to introduce Starlite the horse, a superhero tot, and a vibrant array of colors on both big and small screens. The companies announced this news recently in a year that celebrates the franchise’s significant 40th anniversary, which began with its first animated TV series in 1984. Since then, it has spawned various specials, sequel series, films, merchandise, and more.

In the world of cinema, Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher at Original Film are working on a theatrical adaptation of Rainbow Brite. At this stage, information is scarce, so it’s hard to say how advanced the project is or if a screenwriter or director has been appointed yet. However, with their track record, Moritz and Ascher have proven their ability to bring cherished franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog from video games to successful big-screen adaptations.

Moritz is thrilled to team up with Crayola Studios and Hallmark for Rainbow Brite and looks forward to introducing a fresh franchise to global viewers,” said Moritz, whose resume boasts over 100 credits, ranging from the Fast and Furious series to recent productions like The Boys, Gen V, S.W.A.T., and Spenser Confidential.

On smaller screens, an independent entertainment firm called Cake is teaming up to create a modern series that’s appealing to today’s audiences. This updated show will take place in a magical realm and revolve around themes deeply rooted in the foundation of Rainbow Brite, such as friendship, collaboration, and the transformative power of positivity and color over adversity. Once more, Rainbow Brite will stand as an inspiring figure, demonstrating how she brightens the universe by bringing all the colors of a rainbow to a dismal, gray world with her mission to introduce color, light, and joy. This is according to the show’s official summary.

Cake’s CEO, Ed Galton, expressed his team’s enthusiasm about partnering with Crayola and Hallmark on revitalizing Rainbow Brite: “It’s an exhilarating prospect to redesign such a cherished and emblematic brand. We can hardly contain our anticipation as we look forward to sharing the vibrancy, enchantment, and optimism of this timeless character with a fresh audience worldwide.

The 2014 television series titled “Rainbow Brite” chronicled the exciting journeys of an 8-year-old girl, with Emily Osment providing her voice. Molly Ringwald portrayed the Dark Princess, while the voice roles were also taken by Marcus Toji, Mark C. Hanson, Alexandra Krosney, Cam Clarke, Todd Bosley, Evan Cooper and Mariana Flores.

At Goatfish, Crayola Studios took the lead in discussions with Original Film and Cake, alongside seasoned brand builder and children’s entertainment expert Rick Glankler. Under this partnership, Crayola Properties is set to oversee licensing and merchandising for the revamped Rainbow Brite productions.

In partnership with Hallmark, Original Film, and Cake, Crayola Studios’ grand aspirations for Rainbow Brite span multiple platforms such as film and television, clearly showcasing the company’s wide-reaching ambitions,” said Victoria Lozano, Crayola’s executive vice president. “By reinterpreting this classic brand through the lens of color and creativity that is inherent to Crayola, we are staying true to our goal of producing uplifting and motivating family entertainment content, which in turn fosters long-lasting creative attitudes.

Sabrina Wiewel, Hallmark’s executive vice president and chief culture and strategy officer, expressed her excitement: “This significant year for Rainbow Brite finds us collaborating with Crayola Studios, Cake, and Original Film in a vibrant reinvention of this cherished brand. For four decades, it has captivated audiences, and we can’t wait to deepen relationships with devoted fans and introduce a fresh generation to the enchanting realm of color and creativity.
