As a longtime Batman enthusiast who’s seen countless iterations of the Dark Knight across various media, I must say that James Gunn’s latest take on Batman in the DCU is truly intriguing. The chunkier, beefed-up version with a comic-accurate suit design caught my attention and reminded me a bit of Ben Affleck’s portrayal, albeit not quite.
The fact that this new Batman will be teaming up with Superman at some point in the DCU has me genuinely excited. It seems that Gunn is committed to delivering a fresh take on the world’s most popular superhero while still staying true to the essence of the character that I love so much.
I must admit, it was disappointing to learn that Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2 won’t be part of the DC Universe. However, I have faith in Gunn and DC Studios co-head Peter Safran’s vision for the Elseworlds version of the Dark Knight. And with Mike Flanagan bringing classic villain Clayface to life on the big screen, it seems that the DCU is shaping up to be a fascinating and dark universe indeed.
Lastly, I can’t help but wonder if this new Batman will ever find himself in a pickle so deep that even Superman might need a little help from… a certain caped crusader who wears his underwear on the outside? Only time will tell!
In James Gunn’s initial offering for the DC Universe, “Creature Commandos,” there has been another intriguing glimpse into the revamped Batman character. While a hazy outline of the Dark Knight was previously displayed in an episode of the animated DC series, it was challenging to discern any distinct features or whether it represented a prior version of the hero. However, this week’s “Creature Commandos” episode has confirmed that the upcoming DC Universe will feature a completely new interpretation of the superhero, and there might be significant differences between this Batman and Robert Pattinson’s portrayal in various crucial aspects.
In episode 6 of Creature Commandos, we get our first glimpse of Gotham City in a flashback sequence where Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk) is trying to climb the criminal ladder. However, right when he thinks he’s made it, Batman unexpectedly shows up to send him off to prison. Although this scene offers another brief peek at the Caped Crusader (see below), there can be no doubt that this portrayal differs from previous big-screen versions of Batman. Although certain details are shrouded in darkness, it is revealed that this version of the character has a more muscular build and sports a comic book-style suit design, resembling Ben Affleck’s Batman to some extent. However, DC Studios has confirmed that this is not the same version audiences have come to know from films.
In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Gunn confirmed that Batman would be introduced in the project titled Creature Commandos. While clarifying that this version of Batman is from the DC Universe (distinct from Pattinson’s or Affleck’s portrayals), he hinted at his future role within the emerging cinematic universe. Gunn also disclosed an exciting development: Superman and Batman will join forces in the storyline at some point.
As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who grew up idolizing superheroes, I can confidently say that Batman is undoubtedly my favorite character of all time. From the moment I first laid eyes on the Dark Knight as a child, I was captivated by his unwavering determination, intelligence, and heroic spirit. Over the years, my love for Batman has only grown stronger, and I’ve proudly declared him as my top pick among all superheroes, even when working at Marvel.
Now, as a creative professional in the DC universe, I am thrilled beyond words to have the opportunity to bring this iconic character to life in new and exciting ways. The world has never seen Batman like they will with our upcoming projects, and I can’t wait for fans everywhere to witness his latest adventures alongside Superman. Together, these two legendary superheroes are sure to create memories that will last a lifetime.
James Gunn Won’t Commit to Batman Design in ‘Creature Commandos’
In the recently released episode of Creature Commandos, fans got a better glimpse of Batman, but the original plan was for a more exposed sequence. Director-turned-executive James Gunn informed Rotten Tomatoes that when he first saw the episode, Batman’s cameo was not as concealed in shadows as it is now. He explained that he wasn’t quite prepared to fully reveal the DCU’s version of Batman before his live-action debut, but it can be inferred that Batman will still closely resemble his character from Creature Commandos.
The first time they played the episode for me, it had a lot more Batman. To which I replied, ‘I’m not prepared yet for such extensive shadows!’
It’s anticipated that Batman will officially enter the DC Universe for the first time in ‘The Brave and the Bold’, although this series has encountered some recent delays. Despite this, Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman 2’ won’t be connected to the DC Universe. Instead, James Gunn and DC Studios co-head Peter Safran will contribute to an Elseworlds version of Batman. This is logical as the DCU has shown to be a more fantastical realm than that inhabited by Robert Pattinson’s character. Besides ‘The Brave and the Bold’, it was also announced that horror director Mike Flanagan will create a solo film for the classic Batman villain, Clayface, following his initial appearance in ‘Creature Commandos’ last month.
