Today feels like a triumph for me, Cristin Milioti. I’ve just landed an Emmy nomination for my captivating performance alongside Colin Farrell in the HBO Max and DC series, “The Penguin,” which raked in a whopping 24 nominations across various creative categories! (Check out all the nominations here.) As if that wasn’t exciting enough, I also belong to the talented family behind “Black Mirror,” with our Netflix limited series bagging 10 nominations this morning. Fresh off the news, I had a delightful chat with The Hollywood Reporter about my first Emmy nod, my recent jet-setting adventures, and how embodying the unstoppable Sofia Falcone has shaped my future projects.
How are you feeling?
Feeling absolutely elated here! It’s simply fantastic! The sheer excitement coursing through me is indescribable for our amazing show. You just never know how things will pan out, and I must say, I’m utterly stunned by the pile of nominations we’ve received. To see so many members of our outstanding crew recognized is truly heartwarming. Plus, it’s an added joy to witness the recognition for Black Mirror as well in these prestigious nominations.
Today seems to be a remarkable day for Cristin Milioti’s world, as “The Penguin” has garnered an astounding 24 nominations spread across various creative categories. Was there any nomination that particularly caught your eye, perhaps because it was someone you collaborated closely with or who demonstrated exceptional effort?
Lauren LeFranc, the brilliant showrunner, along with director Helen Shaver, have been exceptional. The writing from Lauren and direction by Helen, especially, were outstanding in the episode that focused on Sofia’s entire backstory. I have tremendous respect for Helen. It’s a tough decision because our hair, makeup team, editors, and numerous others deserve recognition too. The excitement is palpable as we await the nominations!
Have you texted with or talked to Colin Farrell?
In a message, I expressed my immense pride in him and my deep affection for him by saying that knowing him makes it impossible not to love him.
When the Sofia episode first aired, people started discussing on Reddit and other social platforms about how deserving you were of an Emmy for your performance. Were you aware of this buzz, and if so, how do you decide when to ignore it or engage with it?
Personally, I generally avoid the internet as a standard practice, but I’ve had numerous deeply impactful conversations with both professionals within our field and others outside, expressing how much that particular episode resonated with them. Working on that episode left an indelible mark on me. It’s one of my most cherished projects to date. I could feel the palpable enthusiasm surrounding it, whether it was during interviews or casual conversations with people in my neighborhood. It’s not often that one’s feelings towards something are mirrored by the world at large. The experience has been incredibly overwhelming, and I am profoundly grateful for it.

Over the last few months, you’ve engaged with numerous artists and explored many unfamiliar spaces. Which among them has been the most intriguing individual you’ve encountered or the most impactful exchange of ideas have you shared with a colleague in this creative sphere?
Wow, this experience has been absolutely amazing – in the most wonderful sense! I’ve had some truly captivating conversations with Kathy Bates and Jodie Foster. These interactions have left a profound impact on me, being a huge admirer of their work. It’s been quite astounding, to say the least.
You got cast in a pilot, Seven Sisters, opposite Elizabeth Olsen. Is that done filming?
I’ve taken care of it for now, as I’ll be diving into film production next week. Lately, I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the air traveling.
How did the story about the woman who began talking to an invisible voice unfold? This tale is intriguingly centered around a woman whose communication with an unheard voice eventually exposes secrets within her family.
It was great. What a fabulous group.
And the movie, has that been announced yet?
It seems like the announcement hasn’t happened just yet, but this upcoming film promises an intriguing blend of fear and emotion, making it quite captivating.
Discussing films, it seems numerous articles came out today praising The Penguin’s award nominations, not just for DC but also for comic book adaptations overall. Since you’re part of the DC clan, have you had a chance to watch Superman?
I haven’t caught the latest Superman movie just yet, as I’ve been spending a good deal of time flying recently. But rest assured, I’ll make it to the theater to watch it sooner or later.
Does playing the character Sofia influence your aspirations or ambition levels as an actress, making you want to explore new avenues or take on more challenging roles?
Working on this show ignited a fire within me, pushing me to reach new heights, all while leaving me craving more. The opportunities I was granted, things I’ve been eagerly anticipating and yearning to do, were abundant, making the entire experience truly extraordinary. Sharing this journey with such talented individuals has undeniably raised my expectations, as I strive to recapture that magic in future roles and collaborations, mirroring those we had on The Penguin. I’m eagerly seeking similar experiences once again.
