As a devoted admirer of exceptional talent and timeless humor, I’ve always found myself captivated by the brilliant Tina Fey and her masterpiece, 30 Rock. The show’s guest stars were nothing short of extraordinary, but one performance that truly stood out was Cristin Milioti‘s portrayal of Abby Flynn in the episode “TGS Hates Women.” Her delivery of the iconic line, “The whole sexy baby thing isn’t an act! I’m a verrry sexxxy baby,” left me in stitches and made her an instant fan favorite.
During its seven-season stretch from 2006-2013, Tina Fey’s cherished NBC series, “30 Rock,” consistently showcased a long line of notable guest stars.
Even though Cristin Milioti might not be as well-known as actors like Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, or Salma Hayek in the film industry, her portrayal of Abby Flynn in the episode “TGS Hates Women” truly resonated with viewers. Her impeccable acting skills, especially when delivering lines such as “The whole sexy baby thing isn’t an act! I’m a verrry sexxxy baby,” made her a beloved character among fans.
Two years ago, when Taylor Swift’s song “Anti-Hero” from her album “Midnights” became popular, it sparked a resurgence in its popularity. The hit single, which reached No. 1 and was hailed by the singer herself as one of her favorite songs, includes the line: “Sometimes I feel like everybody is a sexy baby / And I’m a monster on the hill.” Fans speculated about Swift’s possible affection for the quirky TV show and whether the lyric might be a nod to Milioti’s character.
Milioti has now weighed in on the mystery.
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham to promote her critically acclaimed turn as Sofia Falcone in Max’s The Penguin opposite Colin Farrell, the veteran actress said she’s definitely aware of the swirl surrounding the lyric.
When the album came out, my phone exploded with people inquiring about it, and honestly, even in my wildest dreams, such praise would be flattering. I’d be thrilled if it were true. However, I haven’t received any confirmation on that matter,” she clarified. If the whispers are correct that Swift is a fan of the series and found solace in it during the pandemic, Milioti would welcome her as a fellow enthusiast. “That show is one I binge-watch when I’m at a location or during a chilly, gloomy winter. I can watch it repeatedly. I watched it week by week in real time and was captivated by it.
30 Rock’s “TGS Hates Women” features Milioti as Abby Flynn, a guest writer brought on by Liz Lemon to debunk her supposed misogyny. However, when Abby presents herself as a seductive figure, causing disruption among the male staff including John Lutz and Alec Baldwin’s characters, Liz tries to correct her perception. In an unexpected turn of events, Liz unveils her secret stand-up persona, Abby Grossman, and confronts Abby in the writers’ room. Unfortunately, Liz’s plan goes awry when Abby admits that she adopted the provocative persona as a means to evade an abusive ex-husband.
When Milioti secured the part, she “could scarcely utter a word” due to her overwhelming excitement as a fan of the series. “I recall being on that set, and Tina Fey, who was incredibly gracious towards me, was giving me tours of the various sets. She said, ‘This is Jack Donaghy’s office,’ and I was trying to be so calm and composed, responding with ‘Oh, in the writers room. Yep. Understood. Sure,’ all while attempting to hide my excitement about it. Everyone on that show was incredibly kind towards me, and it felt like I had just won some competition or something.
For me, playing that character in that show has been one of the highlights of my ever-growing career as a gamer. “I was essentially donning hot pants in New York on my beloved TV series, bringing this character to life,” I reminisce about the iconic “sexy baby” scene filmed in the park with Fey. “I couldn’t wait to make that unique voice and don those outrageous wigs and costumes. That’s something I’m most proud of without a doubt. I adored that show, and it was truly a dream-come-true moment.
