Legendary columnist Roeper, who has been contributing to the Sun-Times since 1987, is choosing to leave due to a buyout offer from the newspaper. The well-respected writer Roeper, who has been with the Sun-Times since 1987, is taking advantage of a buyout offer from the paper. Originally from Chicago, Roeper is among approximately 30 staff members, which includes reporters and editors, accepting buyouts this week as the Sun-Times and NPR radio station WBEZ shift to a nonprofit media approach.
Roeper took over hosting duties on the television show “At the Movies” alongside Roger Ebert from 2000 to 2008, following Gene Siskel’s passing. He informed the public that his last day with the “Sun-Times” would be March 21st, but he has no plans to stop writing any time soon.
Roeper announced that he’s taking a buyout from the Sun-Times. He shared, ‘I’m eager for what’s next in my professional journey, as I’ve no intention of retiring or slowing down.’ You can still catch him reviewing films and TV shows every Friday on Windy City Weekend on ABC-7 Chicago, recording new episodes of The Richard Roeper Show podcast weekly, and writing reviews regularly. He signed off with, ‘See you at the movies.’
In 2018, the Sun-Times rehired Roeper as a critic after suspending him for purchasing Twitter followers, an act that was also reportedly done by numerous other prominent journalists, sports figures, politicians, and celebrities. According to a New York Times reporter, these individuals allegedly paid for an increase in their Twitter followers using fake accounts.
