Critics Have Seen Alien: Romulus, And What They’re Saying Makes My Chest Feel Like It Could Burst With Excitement

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating the treacherous corridors of space stations and battling terrifying creatures, I can confidently say that Alien: Romulus has me more excited than a cat on a hot tin roof! After reading the rave reviews from critics like Eric Eisenberg and Damon Wise, I’m ready to strap in for another heart-pounding, chest-bursting adventure.

every single Alien film in the entire sequence is top-notch, according to me. Yes, you heard it right. Just like pizza, even if an Alien movie seems less than perfect, there’s something appealing about it. I must admit that when I learned a new Alien film, Alien: Romulus, was coming out – the seventh installment in this long-running series – I felt a bit apprehensive. But then, Eric Eisenberg, one of our team members, rated it as the third best in the franchise with a 3.5-star review. With all the hype around this upcoming horror movie, I’m so thrilled that my excitement might explode!

There’s immense excitement for this upcoming sci-fi movie, largely because of the popularity of the Xenomorph series throughout its history. Now that reviews are out, fans can relax knowing Fede Álvarez was an excellent pick to direct Alien: Romulus. Although some critics mention that the film adheres closely to the traditional format, it does so with the skill you’d expect from top-tier franchise entries. As John Nugent from Empire stated:

The ensuing trip, while predictable at times, offers an exhilarating, tension-filled experience. Alien: Romulus skillfully recreates the essential elements of a great Alien movie, meticulously and masterfully executing them. It’s undeniably the third best film in the series, according to official rankings.

I have to confess, I was a little worried about the amount of fan service we might encounter in the upcoming sequel, given that a lot of legacy sequels tend to fall into this trap. However, based on what I’ve heard, Fede Álvarez seems to bring enough of his directorial talent, as demonstrated in movies like Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead, to make Romulus a movie you won’t want to miss. According to Damon Wise from Deadline, he sums it up perfectly:

Álvarez prioritizes originality over fan service, although some scenes may closely resemble past works. However, he meticulously adds his unique touch to the production, as evidenced by a masterful scene where Rain skillfully evades globules of acidic alien blood suspended in zero gravity while firing countless rounds from an M-41A pulse rifle.

Michael Phillips from the Chicago Tribune shares the optimistic murmurs about this latest installment, highlighting its impressive contribution to the series. In his own words:

The film demonstrates a clear sense of direction. It’s skillfully structured, offering a mix of excitement, variety, and intensity, complete with plenty of grit and gore.

The renowned YouTube personality, Cris Parker from 3C Films, can hardly contain his enthusiasm for the upcoming film. In a recent upload on his channel, he revealed:

As a gamer, I can’t help but marvel at Fede Álvarez’s masterful storytelling in this latest entry. He seamlessly blends all the spine-tingling horror and pulse-pounding action from previous installments, creating an exhilarating experience that leaves me breathless. The visuals are nothing short of breathtaking, and the performances by Spaeny and Jonsson truly shine, making them a highlight of the game. All in all, this re-entry into the universe is solid gold!

Simultaneously, Owen Gleiberman from Variety offers positive remarks about the movie, labeling it as one of the stronger sequels. Yet, he notes that it veers towards resembling a video game-style rollercoaster more than emulating the full impact and amazement of Ridley Scott’s original. In Gleiberman’s words:

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in video games and movies, I must say that this production seems to be a masterfully crafted amalgamation of my two favorite pastimes. It offers a thrilling greatest-hits journey reminiscent of a video game, yet it maintains an eerie, suspenseful atmosphere that sets it apart as a truly unique piece of entertainment. The confident and ingenious cinematography had me on the edge of my seat at times, and I can’t wait to see what other surprises this production holds.

According to Brian Tallerico from RogerEbert.com, the film receives praise for its execution but is criticized for lacking bold choices. He appreciates the aspects where the movie excels, yet points out that it doesn’t push boundaries as much as one might hope.

It’s fun, tense, and slimy. It’s also nowhere near as ambitious as some of the films in this series deemed failures. We can’t have everything.

Though the critics didn’t shower it with as much praise as I’d anticipated, the film currently holds an impressive 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. To put it simply, even a less-than-perfect pizza can still be quite tasty, and from what I gather, Alien: Romulus seems to be more than just tasty—it appears to be truly excellent.

2024 will see the arrival of “Alien: Romulus” on movie schedules this coming Friday, August 15th. To get myself ready, I’ve been binge-watching the whole series, and it’s available for streaming if you have a Hulu subscription.
